The Theatre Lab, in partnership with Theater J, presents Tina Howe's MUSEUM at Theater J today, August 7, as the culmination of its 2015 Summer Acting Institute for Teens. That same weekend, The Theatre Lab's Musical Theatre Institute for Teens will open their production of the classic musical CABARET, with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. CABARET runs now through August 8 at The Theatre Lab.

MUSEUM is directed by Randy Baker, co-artistic director of Rorschach Theatre. The story explores the interactions of dozens of people -- art lovers, students, security guards, tourists and more -- walking through a modern art exhibit, and how they see themselves and others in relationship to art. This performance wraps up the Summer Acting Institute, which immerses teens for a month in the art of acting, and gives them a chance to perform on the stage of Theater J, one of the top theatrical venues in Washington, DC.

CABARET, a longtime musical favorite that has been remounted multiple times, takes us to early 1930s Germany, during the beginnings of the gathering Nazi storm, and the world of a seedy nightclub in Berlin, where an American writer strikes up a relationship with a young English showgirl. Directed by Caroline Angell, with musical direction by Joshua Coyne, Cabaret is the second of two musicals -- Pacific Overtures was produced earlier this summer -- in this year's Musical Theatre Institute for Teens, which challenges young artists while providing a supportive environment.

Museum has one performance, tonight, August 7 at 7:30 pm at Theater J (1529 16th Street, NW, entrance on Q Street). Cabaret will run for one weekend, now through August 8, with performances at 7:30 pm and one matinee August 9 at 2 pm at The Theatre Lab. Tickets for both shows are $15 for adults, $10 for students. The Theatre Lab is located at 733 8th Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. Information and tickets can be found online at www.theatrelab.org or by calling (202) 824-0449.

The Theatre Lab is the largest independent theatre school in Washington, with classes for students of all ages and experience levels. The Theatre Lab is also well known for its community outreach, offering hundreds of scholarships to children, teens, and adults who wouldn't otherwise be able to study acting, as well as Life Stories, a groundbreaking program that brings the tools and techniques of storytelling and filmmaking to marginalized or disadvantaged groups of people.
