SPECIFIC GRAVITY explores experiences of displacement through circus, science, and spoken poetry.

The Circus Collective of San Diego fuses contemporary circus with a social consciousness in their new project that aims to raise awareness for displaced persons by telling their stories through movement and poetry. Archimedes' principles of displacement, buoyancy, and specific gravity form a metaphorical framework to explore how people who are forced out of their homeland overcome obstacles, adapt, and negotiate their identity.

Raw emotion, physicality, live original music, and authentic storytelling weave a compelling piece that celebrates courage, resilience, and our shared humanity. The performance includes acrobatics, aerial rope, silks, and lyra, as well as cyr wheel and spoken word by refugee poets. An audience interactive talk balk following the show gives the audience opportunities to engage with artists, poets, and musicians. Appropriate for all ages.

The San Diego-based group is bringing this powerful message to Washington, D.C. It will be presented as part of the Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival (at the) Atlas Performing Arts Center, Feb 24 - Mar 5, 2017: six days of performing and visual arts that celebrate the diversity, energy, and excellence of artists and audiences from DC and beyond.

Performances are February 25th 1PM and February 26th 3PM. Tickets: www.atlasarts.org/event/the-circus-collective-of-san-diego-specific-gravity.
