Spoken Word Poetry Returns to the Albany in CHILL PILL Tonight

The UK's very finest spoken word talent descends on Deptford with astonishing feats of breakneck poetry. Featuring an all-star line-up of guest artists, as well as a razor sharp Headline Poem cooked up in response to the day's news events, Classic Corner, showcasing verse of yesteryear for audiences to test their poetic knowledge, and well-loved anthems on the decks, the Albany's Chill Pill nights present an eclectic mix of original works, re-spun classics and cutting edge underground poetry.

The Chill Pill Collective is the combined linguistic talents of Mr Gee, host of Radio 4's Bespoken Wordand Rhyme and Reason, Canterbury Word Slam Champ Raymond Antrobus, youngest ever UK Poetry Slam Champion Deanna Rodger, first ever Brent Poet Laureate Simon Mole, and Hammer & Tongue National Slam Champion 2012 Adam Kammerling.

Tonight, 20 February internationally renowned poet Indigo Williams will feature alongside the collective for an intimate night of up close and personal spoken word in the Albany's Red Room. Williams is the 2012 New Generation slam champion, with appearances at Glastonbury, the Royal Shakespeare Company, TED and on BBC Radio Four under her belt. On musical duty is Strangelove, a London based hip hop trio consisting of Jakaboski, Freedom and Chango Flash. Strangelove makes moody, leftfield sounds with a psychedelic twist. Combining the lush instrumentals of Chango Flash with their smooth yet complex flows, they bring something wholly original to UK rap.

In April Chill Pill Big One is back in the Albany's big top main house: past headliners include Dizraeli, Hollie McNish, and Benin City - April's line up will be bigger and better than ever before so watch this space for further announcements.

Chill Pill's relationship with the Albany began in 2010, and they have since become a deeply embedded feature of the Deptford community, appearing regularly on a stall at Deptford market to pen free poems for the public. Chill Pill-er Simon Mole is an Associate Artist of Meet Me at the Albany: an artist led day club for the over 60s. Chill Pill Nights are bold, mischievous and very, very good fun: the Albany at its finest.
