Actors Dawn Steele, Simon Paisley Day and Jenna Russell will be presenting the work of new writers at The Marlowe Studio, Canterbury, next month (May).

The Marlowe's Literary Associate Simon Mendes da Costa and the theatre's Creative Projects team have selected four plays to be presented as rehearsed readings in Freedom Writers.

The pieces are the work of members of The Marlowe's writers' groups. Participants have been looking at themes of rights and freedom; a subject also being explored by The Marlowe's performance groups in preparation for July's community production, The Rights Of Others.

Simon Mendes da Costa said: "What could be more important for a stage writer than to have their work performed? It is after all why they wrote the piece in the first place. It can't just be read, it needs actors and a director to complete the picture. Therefore to have a safe platform to try out pieces and forum to lift them off the page is essential.

"There are too few places that this can happen in and to have on board some world-class actors who are not only top in their field but local to, and supporters of, The Marlowe. The writers are genuinely excited to have their work brought to life by such a distinguished cast."

The plays (around 20 minutes each) will be presented at 8pm on Tuesday 12 May. Tickets are £5 (booking fee applies): call the Box Office on 01227 787787 or go to marlowetheatre.com to book.
