CURTAIN CALL to Feature Eclectic Live Music Programme at the Roundhouse

With under a week until Ron Arad's installation Curtain Call opens Bloomberg Summer at the Roundhouse, the Roundhouse have announced new information about the eclectic live music programme.

Curtain Call Live is a series of one-off bespoke gigs that will take place in and around the major installation, which comprises of 5,600 silicon rods suspended from the ceiling of the Roundhouse's main space.

The latest line-up revealed today includes: a totally immersive gig experience from Gaika based on his recently released and widely critically acclaimed mixtape SECURITY; Ivor Novello-nominated DJ Matthew Herbert's A NUDE which will unflinchingly examine and amplify the real noises of the human body in a performance piece using naked dancers, cameras and lighting; cutting edge visual art commissions set to world premiere pieces played by the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO); and a brand new site-specific, participatory art and sound installation KIMA.

The 11 August will see GAIKA present CLUB 88. GAIKA will bring his blend of grime, dancehall, garage, trip hop and R&B in an imaginary and immersive club experience, inspired by Akira, Brixton and his acclaimed April mixtape SECURITY. The gig will take the themes of SECURITY to a new participatory level. Gaika has released a film to accompany the mixtape, linked both to London and the concepts of indiscriminate fear and control that run through his body of work. Gaika will create the imaginary world of SECURITY inside CLUB 88 in an immersive club night experience. The night, unlike anything he has devised before, will be part installation, part live performance and part performance piece.

Matthew Herbert's A NUDE on 10 August will be outer body experience, amplifying the real sounds that all of our bodies make. On the piece Herbert said: "Working in collaboration with choreographer Eleesha Dreenan, and videosmith Sam Meech, A NUDE at the Roundhouse is a chance to experience intimate noises amplified in public. We'll be working with naked dancers, lighting, cameras and of course audio, to try and listen to the sounds of an anonymous body in a space. A big space. It's not designed to titillate or shock, but it is designed to be an unflinching meditation on the realities of a body. At a time when politically we are being asked more and more to see each other through our differences, the project hopes to reassert the democratic principle that, fundamentally, we are made of the same materials."

On 25 August the LCO is returning to the Roundhouse to present a concert which will showcase two world premiere works by CHAINES and Mica Levi commissioned especially for Ron Arad's installation. LCO will also present Yoko Ono's extraordinary and rarely performed Sky Piece to Jesus Christ in which the orchestra are gradually but entirely wrapped in gauze as they perform. In addition, the LCO have announced today that alongside all the works in their programme, they have commissioned five experimental artists to create visual responses to the pieces of music, which will be projected onto the installation: Hannah Perry, Pavel Samokhvalov, Ioana Sisea, UniversalAssemblyUnit and Nicol Vizioli. Other pieces that will feature in the concert are Morton Feldman's Rothko Chapel and John Tavener's haunting Svyati for solo cello and choir exploring themes of spirituality, space and time. LCO will release teaser trailers of the visual artists bespoke curtain videos on Instragram (@lcorchestra).

KIMA, created by Analema Group will take place on Sunday 14 August. Focusing on investigating the visual representation of sound, it relates music to visual form in real time, exploring the architectural and acoustic features of Ron Arad's installation and creating mesmerising soundscapes in the iconic space. Alongside an ensemble of singers and musicians audiences will be encouraged to explore sonic and visual space through both listening and making their own sounds (microphones will be installed on both sides of the 'curtain'). The sounds will create different geometric representations in an ever changing array of visuals.

The line-up for Curtain Call Live also includes: critically-acclaimed, Mercury Music Prize nominated Eska, blending folk, choral, soul, electronica and psychedelia; the return of the BBC Proms to the Roundhouse with music by British composer David Sawyer and electronic-music iconoclast Dan Deacon.

The installation Curtain Call will provide a canvas for films, live performance and audience interaction. Created by Arad in 2011 as a response to the Roundhouse's dramatic main space, the 5,600 silicon rods are suspended from an 18 metre diameter ring. This summer, Arad has again invited artists, musicians and friends to create unique work for the installation. New artists for 2016 include: Kutiman, Daniel Landau, Marshmallow Laser Feast and Universal Everything. Returning from 2011 will be: Babis Alexiadis; Mat Colishaw; Ori Gersht; Greenaway & Greenaway; Gabriel & Shira Klasmer; Christian Marclay; Javier Mariscal; SDNA and David Shrigley.

LCO VISUAL ARTISTS:

Hannah Perry graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2009 and from The Royal Academy of Arts in 2014. Continuously generating and manipulating materials (footage, sound clips, images and objects), Perry makes jarring, fast edited films whose energy and pace describe the struggle to contain adolescent feelings, and the difficulties in managing relationships, both offline and online. Perry captures digitally overheard arguments, intimacies or discussion to form a stream of voices from the fragments of footage and collected images, scored by bass heavy samples. Perry also applies this method to produce performance works, most recently for Serpentine Galleries and Boiler Room, working with choreographers, musicians and dancers, to create overlapping physical interactions, backed by video and sound rooted in house music. www.hannahperry.com

Pavel Samokhvalov is a Moscow-based photographer. He studied Scandinavian history but dropped his studies to play rock in a band of contemporary academic musicians. He then left the band to study cinematography at the Moscow Film Institute. He then started working with Russian magazines such as Esquire, GQ, Vogue, Numero, he subsequently moved to commercials. Ioana Maria Sisea studied drawing and ceramics at the Fine Art Academy in Bucharest and at the HKU, Utrecht, Holland. Her work focuses on personal history and self inquiry through art. This is visible in projects like "(EROS)ION" 2015 and "In Perpetuum" 2016. Explicitly figurative, her objects or installations are always made from fragile materials such as porcelain, earth, paper, plants etc, underlining the ephemeral nature of the world and self. Her practice uses the body as a central element both for portraying and for interpreting different issues. Ioana is more preoccupied with personality rather than originality and she emphasise on the human capacity of filtering reality. UniversalAssemblyUnit: Jules Malcomson and Samantha Lee are digital artists and technicians that specialize in photogrammetry and 3D scanning, particularly capturing organic subject matter and the natural world. They work in the creative industries to bring materiality and physical phenomena into digital environments. Samantha graduated from the Architectural Association in 2012, and in 2013 she co-founded UniversalAssemblyUnit, a collaborative studio working across animation, installation and interaction design. Jules' work as a 3D artist spans a wide range of visual media and technology. Nicol Vizioli is an Italian artist whose practice is mainly based on photography. Coming from a fine art background her work draws upon many influences: the natural world, mythology, literature and painting. Her photographic work is the convergence point, a visual realisation of these imaginary worlds. With the same principles, Nicol is also exploring different media and is working on a film project. After a degree in Cinema she moved to London, where she graduated from MA Fashion Phoitography at LCF, University of the Arts London. www.nicolvizioli.com
