Spiel Players presents two original adaptations of works by Marguerite Duras, described by the New York Times as “Novelist, Playwright, Film Maker, Communist, Outrageous Social Commentator”, known for her screenplays of Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and India Song (1975), and the novel L’Amant (1984; The Lover; film, 1992). Two Plays by Marguerite Duras features Le Shaga and Savannah Bay. It plays at Fraser Studios' new location, 76 Stafford Street, Toronto, from Feb 5 - Mar 1, 2015.

In Le Shaga we find three outcasts and one encounter. Two of the outcasts speak English while one speaks Shaga - a made-up language that nobody knows. They talk some, and they talk some more, and talk incessantly for an hour, desperately seeking common ground. Take the journey into a no man's land where the boundaries of language and nonsense are mixed into a high energy, corrosive cocktail. Savannah Bay is an evocative portrait of two women discovering a common bond in a lost mother and daughter. Exploring love, grief, and the overwhelming power of memory, Savannah Bay is a delicate, lyrical and haunting piece of theatre.

Directed by Joanne Williams, Two Plays by Marguerite Duras features the talents of Deborah Grover, Paolo Santalucia, Peyton Le Barr and Lisa Hamalainen (bios follow). Design is by Joseph Pagnan with Christine Groom.
