Simon Dodd's PLAYTHING Comes to The Depot Theatre

After a highly acclaimed but brief outing at the 2014 Sydney Comedy Festival, absurdist one-act comedy PLAYTHING by multi-awarding winning Australian comedy writer Simon Dodd comes to The Depot Theatre in Marrickville as part of their 2016 Season.

Playing 8pm Wednesday to Saturday and 5pm Sunday from 30 March to 16 April 2016, PLAYTHING is best described as a subtle mix of deep philosophical musings and toilet humour that combines the high-brow with the low-brow to form a whole mono-brow of entertainment.

Two strangers mistake the stage door for the toilet door and find themselves trapped in a play. Unable to leave the stage and faced with an audience, they feel the pressure to perform, but don't know their lines. To make matters worse, a third stranger enters and dies under mysterious circumstances. PLAYTHING is part homage to and piss-take of the Theatre of the Absurd, part existential dilemma, part philosophical rant, lots of bodily fluid jokes and a murder mystery to boot.

Playwright, Simon Dodd is a professional television comedy writer and the recipient of ten Australian Writers' Guild Awards (AWGIES) as part of the writing team behind such successful TV series as Good News Week and The Glasshouse. Over the years, he has played a hand in making humorous heavyweights such as Andrew Denton, Doug Mulray, Paul McDermott, Wil Anderson and Amanda Keller appear even funnier than they would have otherwise.

PLAYTHING features a stellar line up of some of Sydney's most seasoned and emerging indie theatre actors: Caspar Hardaker, Michael Harrs, David Jeffrey, Cherilyn Price and Cherrie Whalen-David. The show is directed by Julie Baz, indie theatre veteran and co-artistic director of The Depot Theatre, and designed by her long-time collaborator and fellow co-artistic director, David Jeffrey; with sound design and stage management by Mehran Mortezaei and photography by Clare Hawley and Katy Green Loughrey.

The Depot Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre established in 2015. Situated within and supported by the historic Addison Road Centre, a thriving inner west Sydney hub for culture, arts and the environment visited by over 200,000 people annually, The Depot Theatre aims to entertain, challenge and inspire audiences with performances that are accessible, affordable and - most importantly - a really fun night out.
