Two key masterworks by Brahms take centrestage in this concert: his final, great, work for orchestra, the Double Concerto, was composed for two renowned musical contemporaries: the cellist Robert Hausmann and his old (though estranged) friend, the virtuoso violinist Joseph Joachim. Composed in the aftermath of his feud with Richard Wagner, Brahms’ Third Symphony was a comparative success, despite being hissed and disrupted at its premiere by the pro-Wagnerites who had gathered in the audience.
