What did our critic think of GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY at Connor Palace? David Greene, the Senior Vice President of Programming at Playhouse Square, informs theater-goers in his program notes for GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY that “it is a non-traditional musical which features songs by music legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bob Dylan.” 

There are times when being a theater reviewer is a fabulous gig. Last night at the Providence Performing Arts Center was one of those times. FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, running through Sunday at PPAC is not to be missed. It is warm, funny, sad, uplifting, and helps us see the world from the vantage point of the oppressed-it is gorgeous. First, let's give credit to FIDDLER'S creators: Jerry Bock wrote the music, Sheldon Harnick the lyrics, and Joseph Stein the book. Bock and Harnick had previously collaborated on the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Fiorello; Stein had been part of the writing team along with Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Neil Simon on television's Your Show on Shows-these were some talented guys. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It held the record for the longest running Broadway musical for almost ten years. The production was extraordinarily profitable and highly acclaimed. It won nine Tony awards, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned five Broadway revivals and a highly successful film adaptation and has enjoyed enduring international popularity.

Tony nominated theatre luminary Austin Pendleton directs and adapts a new stage version of Richard III, Shakespeare's greatest villain, in WARS OF THE ROSES: HENRY VI & RICHARD III, which begins performances August 1st at the 124 Bank Street Theatre. The play combines texts from William Shakespeare's Henry VI Part 3 and Richard III, to create a version, which has never been seen before. Produced by Ruth Stage, the production stars Pendleton as Henry VI and Matt de Rogatis as Richard III, while giving a fascinating take on one of history's most notorious villains. The opening is set for Saturday, August 4th at 7PM. WARS OF THE ROSES: HENRY VI & RICHARD III will play a limited engagement through August 19th. The new drama, featuring an all female ensemble, will bow at St. John's Lutheran Church on Christopher Street in January of 2018. Set to star in the production is Helen Hayes Award-winner Patti Mariano as Sister Mary Cecelia (Broadway: Original Cast of The Music Man, George M!, The Full Monty and more) and newcomer Ashleigh Awusie as Sister Mary Azu (Ain't Never Been Easy). Award-winning director Peter Darney (5 Guys Chillin') directs the limited engagement.

The Broadway revival of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is currently in previews, with an official opening slated for Sunday, December 20 at The Broadway Theatre (1681 Broadway). FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, who most recently helmed the 2015 Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of The King and I. Sher has directed Burstein on Broadway in the revivals of Golden Boy and South Pacific, as well as in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. It will be choreographed byHofesh Shechter, inspired by the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, and the music director will be Ted Sperling (The King and I, South Pacific). The new Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof is got into the holiday spirit by celebrating the first night of Chanukah on Sunday at DOROT on Upper East Side. DOROT, an innovative leader in mobilizing volunteers of all ages to improve the lives and health of the elderly, welcomed members of the Fiddler cast to perform 'If I Were a Rich Man' and 'Sunrise, Sunset' and visit with the seniors. Academy Award® winner, Golden Globe Award® winner & BAFTA winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, The Butler, Southpaw) will be joined by Tony Award® winner Frank Wood (Side Man, Angels In America, Clybourne Park) in the Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's HUGHIE, which will begin performances on Friday, February 5, 2016 and officially open on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Broadway's Booth Theatre(222 West 45 Street). Directed by Tony Award® winner and Olivier Award® winner Michael Grandage(Photograph 51, Red, Frost/Nixon), HUGHIE will play a strictly limited engagement. Tickets will officially go on sale beginning Sunday, November 15, 2015.

Like many others during 1964-1966, I made sure to be home when "The Addams Family" TV show was broadcast. Carolyn Jones and John Astin were like no parents I knew and their family certainly lived the sort of off-kilter life totally different than any other family I had ever known. But it was their unwavering support of each other and their entire family that drew me to the series, so when I heard the glitzy-gloomy musical based on the characters was being brought to the stage by 3-D Theatricals, I excitedly made plans to see it and can happily report it was a spectacular and highly creative extravaganza with an awesomely talented cast.

On Friday, February 28, TheatreWorks New Milford will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Neil Simon's first and longest-running theatrical hit, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, by kicking off its 2014 season with that very show. ANNIE, the new production of the Tony Award-winning musical, went into rehearsal today in New York City with its full company. The production begins previews October 3, 2012 and opens November 8, 2012 at the Palace Theatre (Broadway at 47th Street). Meet the full cast below!

Tradition is the theme as the 2012 Music Circus season continues with the all-time classic musical Fiddler on the Roof, at Wells Fargo Pavilion from August 14 - 19. Like the iconic rooftop musician, playful yet reverent Tevye teeters between his respect for tradition and his love for his daughters, each anxious to follow her heart after a suitor her father finds unsuitable. One of the most beloved musicals ever, Fiddler on the Roof is a heart-warming and at times humorous look at a family living though tumultuous times. Former three-time World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali and his family attended the Friday, January 9th performance of Disney's THE LION KING at ASU Gammage Auditorium in Tempe, AZ. (Mr. Ali is a resident of Scottsdale, Arizona). THE LION KING National Tour performs in Tempe through Sunday, February 8, 2009.
