London's critically acclaimed Shakespeare's Globe, under the artistic direction of Emma Rice, will light up US stages and screens this summer and fall, with a three-city limited engagement of The Merchant of Venice, which will play limited engagements in New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago in July and August. Two-time Olivier- and Tony Award-winner Jonathan Pryce stars as Shylock. The production is directed by Jonathan Munby.
The magic of Venice was in the air at Shakespeare & Company last night. After a stirring performance of The Merchant of Venice, directed by Tina Packer in the Tina Packer Playhouse, it was cocktails, dinner, and dancing under the stars on the beautiful campus of Shakespeare & Company. The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain (NYT) begin their autumn season in the West End this week. Following the huge success of the REP seasons in 2013 and 2014, the company returns to the Ambassadors Theatre with three new productions from September to December exploring themes of sex education, relationships, class and heritage. Baltimore Shakespeare Factory (BSF), in conjunction with British original pronunciation (OP) experts, the father and son team of David and Ben Crystal, opens its 2015 season with a historic production of The Merchant of Venice. Compassion!') and playwright Rody Vera's ('The Merchant of Venice,' 'D' Wonder Twins of Boac') reimagining of Anton Chekhov's masterwork 'The Cherry Orchard,' now titled 'Arbol de Fuego,' a flowering tree that bears no fruit, which frames the main entrance to the nearly bankrupt estate Balay Dako in Negros Occidental, Southern Philippines, during the '70s.

Today, we're featuring F. Murray Abraham circa 1982. Abraham has focused on stage work throughout his career, giving notable performances as Pozzo in Mike Nichols's production of Waiting for Godot, Malvolio in Twelfth Night for the New York Shakespeare Festival, and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice for the Off Broadway Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA) in March 2007, which was performed at the Duke Theatre in New York and also at The Swan Theatre, part of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He reprised this role in February 2011, when he replaced Al Pacino in the Public Theater's production. In the 1997/98 Broadway season he starred in the new chamber musical Triumph of Love opposite Betty Buckley, based on Marivaux's classic comedy.

Theater for the New City will present Charles Busch's new comedy JUDITH OF BETHULIA. The play, starring Busch, and directed by Carl Andress (The Divine Sister; Die, Mommie, Die!) will play a limited engagement of 24 performances from Friday, March 30 through Saturday, April 28 at Theater for the New City's Cino Theater (155 First Avenue).
