BWW Reviews: Treading on Broken Glass
by Kristen Morale - Sep 4, 2014

As a result of one man's interest and dedication to the proper telling of actress Laurette Taylor's magnificent story, New York is now fortunate enough to own a piece of the treasure that is Steven Carl MccCasland's What Was Lost. Written and directed by McCasland and hereby added to the list of successful and praise-worthy Beautiful Soup Theater productions, which include a recent production of Liliom and the critically acclaimed Little Wars, What Was Lost is a complete surprise to both those familiar with the story of stage actress Laurette Taylor, and to those who have yet to understand the fortitude one woman can possess in the depths of her nearly shattered heart. It is truly one of my best experiences at the Dorothy Strelsin Theater. (more...)

CABARET LIFE NYC: Two Charming Young Women Performers--Carly Ozard and Nikki MacCallum--Conquer the Challenge of the Personalized Tribute Show at The Duplex
by Stephen Hanks - Jun 23, 2014

The biggest challenge in personalizing a tribute show is when the set list is structured to tell a story about the performer's life. Those songs better be good, that life better be interesting, and that storytelling patter better be clever, humorous, and self-deprecating or an audience (let alone a reviewer) will tune you out quicker than a liberal accidentally hitting FOX News on the remote. I recently saw two different shows at The Duplex from enchanting young women performers—Carly Ozard and Nikki MacCallum--who deftly managed to weave their love of a singer (Bette Midler for Ozard) or a songbook (Kander & Ebb for MacCallum) into a tale of life journey and personal growth to produce charming and entertaining shows. BWW Reviews: Public Theatre Explores the Absurd Side of Dysfunction
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Feb 2, 2014

Lewiston's Public Theatre has mounted a stylish, wistful, zany production of Kim Rosenstock's Tigers Be Still, a bittersweet comedy that looks at the absurd side of dysfunction. The play, which had its premiere at New York's Roundabout Theatre, tells the intertwined stories of two families who have been immobilized by loss and their struggle to emerge from depression and move forward with their lives. Narrated by the daughter Sherry, whose recently acquired job as an art therapist gives her the impetus to shake her gloom, the play draws an ironic contrast between Sherry's newfound optimism and the darker realities of the other characters. Ever lurking in the background is the metaphorical - and actual - threat of a tiger escaped from the zoo - the nameless fear that paralyzes action until at last confronted toward the end of the play. Garth Brooks Is In Concert At The Encore In Las Vegas & We Are Lucky To Have HIm
by Ellen Sterling - Dec 13, 2009

Here in Las Vegas there seems to be a cultural imperative to categorize everything. The shows, restaurants, shops, etc., that win the daily paper's annual 'Best of Las Vegas' votes tout their wins by putting the daily paper's logo on their billboards, windows and, in fact, any place where it might be seen. I don't know what it means to the bottom line or prestige or anything. But they make a big deal out of it. (more...)

FAR OUT! Lauren Fox and Friends Rock & Roll at 54 Below with a Reverential and Remarkable Woodstock Tribute Show
by Stephen Hanks - Aug 16, 2013

In cabaret, there are variety shows and there are VARIETY shows. Going on close to three years as a reviewer and attending a myriad of these affairs that can range in feel from Ed Sullivan to the Gong Show, I no longer have much patience for the lower case version. But every once in a while there's a multi-performer extravaganza that screams capital letters. It turns out that MAC-Award winning singer Lauren Fox has acquired The Knack for staging 'Big V' variety shows because they are all about the themes, the stories, and the music, and not about the performers. And wouldn't you know it? With the egos being upstaged by everyone's joy and passion for the project, everybody wins . . . especially the audience. That was the case last night at 54 Below with the Fox produced 'One Night of Peace & Music: A Tribute to Woodstock.' (more...)
