by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 16, 2015

Need a pick-me-up from a bad day? Aching to smile heartily through a pleasantly peppy stage musical? Then you need not look further than the rousing, just-launched new touring production of the Tony Award-winning hit 42ND STREET, now currently entertaining audiences at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through November 22. Earnestly cheerful and unabashedly optimistic, this feel-good, all-singing, all-dancing 1980 stage adaptation of Busby Berkeley's classic 1933 movie musical is back on the road in a brand new, non-Equity national tour directed by co-writer Mark Bramble, who earned a Tony nomination for directing the Tony-winning 2001 Broadway revival. Aside from its Broadway-caliber creative aspects, this new tour succeeds tremendously thanks to its young, energetic, and incredibly likable ensemble cast that brings vim and vigor to the aging Great-Great-Grand-Daddy of all backstage musicals. BWW Reviews: New Compact HAIRSPRAY A Rousing Winner at OC's Chance TheaterBWW Reviews: New Compact HAIRSPRAY A Rousing Winner at OC's Chance Theater
by Michael L. Quintos - Jul 27, 2015

Bravo to Chance Theater for taking on this mainstream hit and making it actually feel like a fresh, awesome little indie. Now playing through August 9, the latest offering from Orange County's bold, award-winning regional theater company is their own 'intimate' theater re-staging of HAIRSPRAY, the 2002 hit Tony Award-winning musical comedy. The results? Quite simply a more compact production that is an absolutely undeniable, all-around rousing winner. Under the direction of Kari Hayter, the celebratory production's immersive, semi-theater-in-the-round minimalist approach actually thrusts the show's outstanding music and comedy out front, wonderfully blanketing the audience in the show's pro-integration, pro-acceptance storyline about a rotund young lady with big hair and big dreams who sets off to change the world. by Kristen Morale - Jan 14, 2016

The Academy Playhouse, a theater that has brought Cape Cod audiences an eclectic mix of productions that are always of the upmost professional quality, is taking a slight tangent from its recently closed holiday presentation of Sounds of the Season and delving into a play of a more murderous nature, also chock full of just enough laughs to make audiences question whether or not they should, in fact, notice the play's comedic side in the circumstances presented. Written by Ira Levin, Deathtrap makes its way to the Academy stage and from the start captures audiences with the extreme witticism of its characters and the brooding sense of mystery and danger which the title of the play alone implies. BWW Review: Buyer Beware of Charming HAIL, CAESAR!'s Bait-and-SwitchBWW Review: Buyer Beware of Charming HAIL, CAESAR!'s Bait-and-Switch
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 5, 2016

One would think that a movie like HAIL, CAESAR!, written and directed by two of America's favorite filmmakers, starring a veritable who's who of Hollywood heavyweights, and set in one of the most entertaining and romanticized eras in American history would be a Sure Fire hit. The first time that I saw the film's trailer, that's immediately what I thought. I just naturally assumed that it would be scheduled for a mid-December release, in time to scoop up the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical, and to be the kooky, critical darling that snatched an Oscars' Best Picture nod, a la THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Instead, it was released in the first week of February, one of the slowest movie-going times of the year, eons away from awards-consideration, and is easily the most disappointing movie that I've seen in quite a while. Kennedy and the man tasked with calming the storm. Hailed as a "sensational night of theater" (NPR), All the Way runs April 1-May 8, 2016 in the Fichandler Stage. (more...)

Luck has nothing to do with it. Mary Zimmerman's GUYS AND DOLLS is a well thought out, surprisingly fresh reinvention of one of the best golden age musicals ever written. The charming production just concluded a 9-month run at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and can now be seen on stage at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts through December 20. It is the second musical to make such a transition following last December's enchanting Into the Woods, also directed by Zimmerman. Let us hope the tradition will continue. (more...)
