BWW Review: Rousing New 42ND STREET Tour Dazzles OC with Its Fancy Footwork
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 16, 2015

Need a pick-me-up from a bad day? Aching to smile heartily through a pleasantly peppy stage musical? Then you need not look further than the rousing, just-launched new touring production of the Tony Award-winning hit 42ND STREET, now currently entertaining audiences at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through November 22. Earnestly cheerful and unabashedly optimistic, this feel-good, all-singing, all-dancing 1980 stage adaptation of Busby Berkeley's classic 1933 movie musical is back on the road in a brand new, non-Equity national tour directed by co-writer Mark Bramble, who earned a Tony nomination for directing the Tony-winning 2001 Broadway revival. Aside from its Broadway-caliber creative aspects, this new tour succeeds tremendously thanks to its young, energetic, and incredibly likable ensemble cast that brings vim and vigor to the aging Great-Great-Grand-Daddy of all backstage musicals. by Jason Carlos - May 12, 2016

The new spring programming at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts begins with the return of Neil Simon's THE ODD COUPLE. This comedic classic of polar opposite friends-turned-roommates is an illustration of what Soulpepper does best - which is why this encore is on stage again until June 11. Starring Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper, Albert Schultz as infamous slob Oscar Madison, and fellow Founding Member, Diego Matamoros as the level-headed and neurotic Felix Ungar, THE ODD COUPLE assembles some of Soulpepper's best for a near-flawless night of classic comedy. BE WITH YOU by Shri Ramakant Maharaj is Now Available
by BWW News Desk - Mar 21, 2016

'Be With You - Thoughtless Reality' is a new pocket-sized book with immense import. These Spontaneous Quotes emanate from Self-Realized Master, Shri Ramakant Maharaj who met his Master, the legendary Nisargadatta, in 1962. Recently described on Amazon as 'veritable dynamite', these drops of nectar remind seekers of their forgotten identity, of who they really are, in an unprecedented, effective way. The editor, Ann Shaw explained: 'Be With You' is a unique book of golden nuggets of universal truth that will definitely resonate in the Heart of the reader. This is no ordinary book of quotations sourced from a branch of philosophy, spirituality or mindfulness. This very rare and unique collection of utterances are spoken direct from Source, from a true Master, one who has transcended the limitations of bodily existence. Shri Ramakant resides in what is termed the 'Stateless State', or 'Thoughtless State'. In effect, these teachings emerge from beyond the mind, prior to mind. In the Master's words, 'Reality is beyond words, beyond worlds'. He is communicating 'Spontaneous, Direct Knowledge' which is universal knowledge. It is our knowledge, our reality'. Ann elucidated further: 'This book of universal truth is expressed so simply, yet so forcefully, that it is like a great wind blowing from Essence to Essence - from the 'Awakened Master' to the 'Sleeping Master', (the seeker). This mover or shaker is indeed 'veritable dynamite' that will disturb, explode and obliterate all one's comfortable and safe, illusory concepts. The Master's hammering re-awakens and transforms the reader from his slumbering, dream-state, to Reality. This enables him to reclaim his rightful Masterly status, resulting in the sure-fire knowledge that he is himself unborn. He is Ultimate Reality'. Within the Indian tradition, the Guru or Master is highly revered. His role is central; his words have the power to cut through illusion, and re-ignite Reality. They have the effect of bringing the seeker back to Source, facilitating a return to his true Home - 'Oneness'. Lately, a lifelong seeker relayed how Maharaj had profoundly impacted him: 'When I came across Shri Ramakant Maharaj, I knew instantly that he was my Master. His revolutionary teachings brought the search to an end in a flash. It was miraculous! At last, I was home'. The Master's message is definitely not a comfortable read that feeds and entertains the complacent dreamer. As stated in the Preface of this book: 'It is an urgent, clarion call for everyone to wake up before it is too late. 'Find out who you are in a real sense. Otherwise, you will be shaking and trembling with fear on your death-bed', urges Shri Ramakant. Shri Ramakant Maharaj is based in Nashik, Maharashtra. He welcomes all sincere seekers. 'Be With You - Thoughtless Reality' is available also in Kindle format. This book follows 'Selfless Self: Talks with Shri Ramakant Maharaj', published last year. Available from Watkins Books and Amazon. (more...)

BWW Blog: Diana Sanchez - How to Get Non Theatre People to Come to Your Shows
by Guest Blogger: Diana Sanchez - Jun 24, 2016

Once you have put your show together and you are ready to perform it in front of an audience, there is only one thing left to do: sell tickets. Now we all know the basics of selling tickets. You make pretty fliers to put up, you invite all of your friends to come, you make sure that all of your family will be attending. That's the easy part, you know that all of your fellow theatre nerds will be there, and that common show go-ers, friends, and family will mostly likely attend as well. But, how do you sell tickets to the people who aren't usually seen within a couple hundred feet of the auditorium? This is more difficult. Non theatre people will usually not stop to look at a flier and be interested to go to a show. To get people like this to go you have to do a little more convincing. (more...)

BWW Preview: Living Dangerously Brings Fame to Players in APA's DEATHTRAP
by Kristen Morale - Jan 14, 2016

The Academy Playhouse, a theater that has brought Cape Cod audiences an eclectic mix of productions that are always of the upmost professional quality, is taking a slight tangent from its recently closed holiday presentation of Sounds of the Season and delving into a play of a more murderous nature, also chock full of just enough laughs to make audiences question whether or not they should, in fact, notice the play's comedic side in the circumstances presented. Written by Ira Levin, Deathtrap makes its way to the Academy stage and from the start captures audiences with the extreme witticism of its characters and the brooding sense of mystery and danger which the title of the play alone implies. BWW Review: Buyer Beware of Charming HAIL, CAESAR!'s Bait-and-Switch
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 5, 2016

One would think that a movie like HAIL, CAESAR!, written and directed by two of America's favorite filmmakers, starring a veritable who's who of Hollywood heavyweights, and set in one of the most entertaining and romanticized eras in American history would be a Sure Fire hit. The first time that I saw the film's trailer, that's immediately what I thought. I just naturally assumed that it would be scheduled for a mid-December release, in time to scoop up the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical, and to be the kooky, critical darling that snatched an Oscars' Best Picture nod, a la THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Instead, it was released in the first week of February, one of the slowest movie-going times of the year, eons away from awards-consideration, and is easily the most disappointing movie that I've seen in quite a while. BWW Review: GUYS AND DOLLS, Reinvented and Rich with Life at The Wallis
by Ellen Dostal - Dec 11, 2015

Luck has nothing to do with it. Mary Zimmerman's GUYS AND DOLLS is a well thought out, surprisingly fresh reinvention of one of the best golden age musicals ever written. The charming production just concluded a 9-month run at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and can now be seen on stage at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts through December 20. It is the second musical to make such a transition following last December's enchanting Into the Woods, also directed by Zimmerman. Let us hope the tradition will continue. (more...)
