Klazz-Ma-Tazz Release 'Tangibility'Klazz-Ma-Tazz Release 'Tangibility'
by BWW News Desk - Jul 23, 2015

Klezmer/Jazz fusion group Klazz-Ma-Tazz will release its debut album Tangibility on OneTrickDog* Records.  Founded by violinist and composer Benjamin Sutin, in 2014, Klazz-Ma-Tazz blurs the boundaries of labels and genres.  Rooted in the jazz idiom, the music reflects the influences of folk music from around the world, but particularly from the varied ethnic backgrounds of its band members: Klezmer and Balkan Folk music, Indian Classical Music, Native American Tribal Dance and English Folk Music, among others.  Tangibility is a musical journey that explores the unique chemistry of gifted musicians working to forge a new musical form. The resulting musical melting pot finds an authentic home and voice in a city that has always had its identity in the confluence of diverse cultures. The majority of the tracks on Tangibility are Sutin's original compositions. Tangibilty will be available for purchase September 1, on Bandcamp.com and iTunes.  (more...)

BWW Reviews: Monomoy Theater's LEND ME A TENORBWW Reviews: Monomoy Theater's LEND ME A TENOR
by Kristen Morale - Jul 16, 2015

Directed by Francesca James, Lend Me a Tenor is beyond brought - it is more like jolted to life in Monomoy's current production of Ken Ludwig's Tony-winning comedy, and to say that it is anything but brilliant this time around is a severe understatement. It is one of the only productions I have seen in a long time where I was actually dreading the end of the first act, not knowing if it ended as it did or if it was to be continued after intermission; thankfully, Act Two did indeed happen and did anything but disappoint. It is also one of those shows which, after the curtain has closed, persuade people to drag their family and friends to see so that they, too, may understand how epic it truly is. It is a shame that there are only a few performances available to see, but if you are free this Friday or Saturday, Monomoy Theater is where you should be spending some time. (more...)

by Stephen Hanks - Jan 21, 2015

As the days dwindled down to a precious few in 2014, a few cabaret goers and performers in what is affectionately but also self-mockingly called the “cabaret community” would sidle up and ask if I was planning my annual end-of-the year “Best Of” column, similar to the “Top 20 Bests and Favorites” piece over the first half of the year I posted back in early July. I would respond in the negative with very reasonable and believable excuses, but the truth is I didn't want to reveal my “Bests” of the year until the voting for the 2014 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Awards had ended. There's enough baggage and backstage whispering that comes with administering the BWW Awards, so I wasn't about to publish any opinions that might influence the vote while it was in process. I may be crazy but I'm not masochistic. But now all bets are off. You want lists? I'll give you lists. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Monomoy's SPELLING BEE Spells Success!BWW Reviews: Monomoy's SPELLING BEE Spells Success!
by Kristen Morale - Aug 10, 2015

What would happen if one were to switch the first few letters of "amazing" to form a new, exciting word that only certain minds could quickly figure out? Actually, who cares! As long as each of you knows the word's definition and what it implies, there can only be synonyms of the word used to describe Monomoy Theatre's current production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Having never before seen a production of this rather well-known comedy of a musical, letting Monomoy give me a very impressive and lasting first impression was a wonderful was an absolute privilege; I didn't expect anything less from the group, as the amount of talent on stage makes every play and musical performed wonderful, to say the least. Spelling Bee is really something quite special, as such a simple idea for a plot is taken and transformed, through music and rather peculiar characters, into something that will keep audiences laughing for an evening; it is a production that will not have anyone spelling "regret."
