BWW Review: Good Theater's LOVE LETTERS Plays Like Fine Chamber Music

A two character play in which the actors sit behind a desk and read from letters for eighty minutes poses a series of challenges to any director. What is it then that makes Brian P. Allen's new production of A.R. Gurney's 1989 drama, Love Letters, so completely mesmerizing? Not only is Gurney's writing poetic and poignant, but the production, which opened at Portland's Good Theater this past week starring Kathleen Kimball and Brian Allen (his role later assumed by Tony Reilly and then Steve Underwood), is so perfectly calibrated, so subtly interiorized that it resembles a fine chamber music performance. Charles D. Dantzler was born in the 1950s; a time of rapid change in the world, and was stricken with polio at the age of two. With a life beginning on the cusp of the information-driven, technology-based society known today, Dantzler was able to experience the tail end of yesterday while living to see where we are headed for our tomorrow. Dantzler, a graduate of Flint Northern High School, is the second of six children born to a stay-at-home, God-fearing, loving mother and a hardworking father, a factory line worker for the General Motors Corporation. Charles was raised in a working-class neighborhood where everyone knew one another, and his upbringing as well as his receiving the Salvation experience at age fifteen have not only enabled him to move beyond the results of the polio since age two but also laid the foundation for his present-day life.
