BWW Reviews: RUN FOR YOUR WIFE Takes a Comic Look at a Taxi Driver's Double LivesBWW Reviews: RUN FOR YOUR WIFE Takes a Comic Look at a Taxi Driver's Double Lives
by Shari Barrett - Oct 6, 2014

From the antics of silent film stars such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, to the more modern chicanery of the Marx Brothers or the physical comedy of the Three Stooges, people love to laugh out loud at the goings on of individuals trying to get away with something, even when they know they are doomed to get caught. Such is the tale told in Ray Cooney's RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, brilliantly directed at a breakneck pace by Gary Robbins at the Torrance Theatre Company through October 12. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MOVE OVER MRS. MARKHAM Closes Oyster Mill Year With LaughsBWW Reviews: MOVE OVER MRS. MARKHAM Closes Oyster Mill Year With Laughs
by Marakay Rogers - Nov 25, 2014

Oyster Mill Playhouse closed its season with a hysterical British bedroom farce, one of Oyster Mill's strongest suitsRay Cooney is England's king of the bedroom farce, best known for his Run for Your Wife and for IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY. But his late 60's-early 70's set MOVE OVER MRS. MARKHAM may be funnier than either of those. It's definitely the sort of play that should be on the Oyster Mill Playhouse stage where, fortunately, it has been now. Oyster Mill has the configuration for farce, as well as intimate seating allowing audiences to miss no hilarious move, much less the necessary entrances and exits for the best farces. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - May 22, 2014

The Windsor Jesters Spring offering of their 63rd continuous season is Ray Cooney's hilarious British farce, "Run for Your Wife". Directed by Rosemarie Beskind of Simsbury, "Run for Your Wife", tells the story of very ordinary taxi driver John Smith, played by Chris Bushey of Bloomfield, who just so happens to have two wives, two homes and two lives. John has successfully kept each wife, Helen Malinka of Glastonbury as Mary Smith and Tracy Arcari Weed of West Hartford as Barbara Smith, from finding out about the other one until he decides to help out an old woman who is getting mugged. The play proves the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished, as Mr. Smith is soon being investigated by two police detectives, Mark O'Donnell of Windsor as Det. Sgt. Troughton and Steve O'Brien of Simsbury as Det. Sgt. Porterhouse. Even though John is eagerly assisted by his upstairs neighbor Stanley Gardner, Bruce Larsen of Glastonbury, it looks like John's secret is going to come out. (more...)

In a sense, SEUSSICAL is formulaic pabulum. But like I formulaically say almost every review (after a eye-catching, misleading characterization of a piece - i.e. pabulum), that doesn't make it bad. It has very simple but charming themes about loyalty, being kind to all people despite difference in appearance, and staying true to yourself. It's no wonder that it's a youth theatre favorite. BWW Reviews: OKLAHOMA! Kicks off Torrance Theatre Company's 15th Anniversary Season in Great StyleBWW Reviews: OKLAHOMA! Kicks off Torrance Theatre Company's 15th Anniversary Season in Great Style
by Shari Barrett - Aug 24, 2014

Torrance Theatre Company celebrates its 15th anniversary by saddling up at the James Armstrong Theatre and presenting OKLAHOMA! with music and lyrics by one of Broadway's most influential duos, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Based on Lynn Riggs' stage play, Green Grow the Lilacs, OKLAHOMA! marked the duo's first collaboration and set the standard for modern musical theatre. Although not the first musical to tell a story of emotional depth and psychological complexity, OKLAHOMA! introduced a number of new storytelling elements and techniques including the use of song and dance to convey plot and character rather than act as a diversion from the story, and the firm integration of every song into the plot-line. And most important, they introduced a new element to musical theatre: social commentary. (more...)
