Joshua Bell Joins Jacques Lacombe and the NJSO Tonight

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) and New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) present Bell & Lacombe, a one-performance-only program tonight, May 9, at 8 pm in NJPAC's Prudential Hall. The Grammy Award-winning violinist performs Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Ravel's Tzigane on a program that includes Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture and Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1. Roots and Wings Theatrical Bring Six New Shows to NYC, 5/14-18

For the seventh installment of the Duct Tape and A Dream Festival, Roots and Wings Theatrical will showcase six dynamic projects divided between two programs running in repertory May 14-18, 2014. The festival consists of a "Duct Tape" Program and a "Dream" Program. Each program has something to offer for all audiences. The festival is truly eclectic with plays written by emerging artists exploring a variety of subjects such as linguistics, death in the family, things you may have learned in your 20s, and modern adaptations of classics (see: Crutchfield's Pe[t]er Gynt inspired by Ibsen's Peer Gynt). The programs will play in rotation at Theatre 54 at 244 West 54th Street, 12th Floor, New York, New York 10019 for five days with 42 artists sharing the stage. (more...)

New York Philharmonic to Return to Bravo! Vail for 12th Annual Summer Residency, 7/18-25

The New York Philharmonic will return to Bravo! Vail in Colorado for the Orchestra's 12th- annual summer residency there, performing six concerts July 18-25, 2014. Music Director Alan Gilbert will conduct three programs, July 18-20, featuring works by composers for whom he has advocated during his tenure, ranging from Nielsen to The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Composer-in- Residence Christopher Rouse. The other Philharmonic concerts will be conducted by Bramwell Tovey (July 23 and 25) and Ted Sperling (July 24), and will feature works by Copland, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Loesser, among others. Richard Thomas & Kristen Connolly Set for The Old Globe's OTHELLO

The Old Globe today announced two of the stars of Shakespeare's classic tragedy Othello, the first show of the Globe's 2014 Summer Shakespeare Festival. Making their Globe debuts are Emmy Award-winner Richard Thomas ('The Americans,' 'The Waltons') as Iago and Kristen Connolly ('House of Cards,' The Cabin in the Woods) as Desdemona. Both artists continue collaborations with Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein that began in New York: Thomas starred in Edelstein's critically acclaimed production of Timon of Athens at The Public Theater in 2011, and Connolly in three Shakespeare plays that Edelstein helped produce at The Public. Due to the weather forecast for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, and out of concern for the safety of the audience and the musicians, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, in consultation with the NYPD, the Central Park Conservancy, and the New York Philharmonic, has made the decision to cancel this evening's performance of the New York Philharmonic on the Great Lawn of Central Park. From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire. (more...)

The September broadcasts of The New York Philharmonic This Week - the weekly radio series of concerts and recordings by the New York Philharmonic, hosted by Alec Baldwin - begins with Music Director Alan Gilbert launching the Philharmonic's 2014 Bravo! Vail residency with Nielsen's Maskarade Overture; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, with the 2013-14 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman as soloist; selections from Grieg's Peer Gynt; and Liszt's Les Preludes. The second week, Alan Gilbert conducts the Orchestra in a performance of R. Strauss's Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks; The Marie-Josee Kravis Composer-in-Residence Christopher Rouse's Oboe Concerto, with Principal Oboe Liang Wang as soloist; and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy. When we think of Norway, "laugh riot" is usually the last thing that comes to mind. The Washington Stage Guild's premiere production of Elling may be slow going at first, but it revs up to give you an amusing slice of life in modern-day Oslo. It's a very funny place indeed. This Elling is a classic comedy in the Odd Couple mode. Think: Neil Simon meets Sigmund Freud, with a healthy dose of Ken Kesey thrown in. (more...)

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Presents PLAY ALONG WITH THE CSO, 5/11

The CSO is inviting musicians from the community to once again join professional musicians in their event, Play Along with the CSO. The event will take place on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 11, 2014 from 1:00-3:30pm at the Chattanooga Market. Musicians are invited to perform in one of three different performances, which will take place at 1:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm. Play Along registration costs $35 and includes a free t-shirt, music, and the opportunity to have coaching in advance with a CSO musician. The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO) and New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) present Bell & Lacombe, a one-performance-only program on Friday, May 9, at 8 pm in NJPAC's Prudential Hall. The Grammy Award-winning violinist performs Sibelius' Violin Concerto and Ravel's Tzigane on a program that includes Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture and Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1.
