Due to popular demand and critical acclaim, WANDA'S MONSTER A Family Musical will receive a commercial Off-Broadway engagement beginning July 13 and running through September 8 at The Vineyard's Dimson Theatre (108 East 15th Street), it has been announced by Barbara Zinn Krieger, Artistic Director of Making Books Sing, the non-profit and theatre company that commissioned the musical and presented it to critical acclaim and sold-out houses earlier this season. Featuring more than four dozen original songs written by Hy Zaret, co-author of the iconic popular song 'Unchained Melody,' and Lou Singer between 1959 and 1961, the albums introduced scientific concepts and terms using catchy, easy-to-learn lyrics and music to grade school students across America in the early 1960s. BWW Interviews: Stephen Pier - Heart to Hartt

Stephen Pier has achieved a uniquely rich and varied career as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer. His credits as a performer include many years with the Jose Limon Dance Company where the New York press hailed him as '...one of the most gifted dancers on the modern dance scene today.' He went on to become a leading soloist with the Hamburg Ballet in Germany, performing the title roles in John Neumeier's Othello and Saint Matthew's Passion, and creating numerous other major roles during his nine years with the company. As a member of the Royal Danish Ballet for six years, Mr. Pier had the privilege of dancing leading roles in works of Bournonville, Balanchine, MacMillan, Bejart, and collaborating with many of Europe's finest contemporary choreographers. Under the artistic direction of the Mexican Flamenco star, Maria Elena Anaya, Eclipsis Flamenco becomes an exuberant celebration. The plasticity, strength, rhythm and eroticism that emerge from the interaction of pre-Hispanic dance and Mexican folklore reverberate in the profound chords of the guitar, percussion and 'cante flamenco.' The all-professional company's dancers, singers, and musicians trace the development of the dynamic cultural fusion of these two worlds revealing a vision of life full of pride, passion, honor, love, and sorrow. The Hartt School presents Hartt Dances, featuring Petrushka, a collaboration of the Dance Division and Hartt Orchestra, Friday, November 22, and Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 PM; and Sunday, November 24, at 2:00 PM, in Lincoln Theater. Hartt's fall mainstage dance concert highlights Stephen Pier's contemporary restaging of Petrushka, features the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major, BWV 1049, with choreography by Doris Humphrey; Jose Limon's Symphony for Strings, to the music of William Schuman; and a new creation by Katie Stevinson-Nollet, set to the work of Stephen Montague. A pioneer in the world of contemporary dance, MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient Liz Lerman's new theatrical dance piece Healing Wars examines healing in wartime, the nature of damage that continues when battles are over and the question of how individuals and societies absorb the pain and impact of war. The production features a company of performers in multiple roles, including Marjani Forte, George Hirsch, Tamara Hurwitz Pullman, Ted Johnson, Alli Ross, Samantha Speis, Keith A. Thompson, renowned stage and film actor Bill Pullman and a combat veteran to be announced at a later date. The limited engagement, world-premiere production of Healing Wars runs June 6 - June 29 in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. (more...)

BWW Interviews: Hilda Morales: An Extraordinary Career with Pennsylvania Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Antony Tudor and the Hartt School of Dance

Hilda Morales was born in N.Y. City, and grew up in Puerto Rico. Her early training was with Ana Garcia of the Ballet San Juan. At 14 years of age, Ms. Morales received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to study at George Balanchine's School of American Ballet. She danced as a principal dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet, soloist with American Ballet Theatre, artist-in-residence with the Colorado Ballet and guest appearances with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Albuquerque Ballet and Jacksonville Ballet. During her dancing career, Ms. Morales performed in full-length classic ballets as well as works by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Agnes de Mille, Antony Tudor, John Butler, Alvin Ailey, and Jose Limon. Ms. Morales was featured in the movie The Turning Point, in the role of Sandra, directed by Herbert Ross. She guest teaches and is on the faculty of the Central Pennsylvania summer programs, and joined The Hartt School faculty in 1998. (more...)

The production will now take place at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place, 175 E. Chestnut Street, and the date and time of the performance remain unchanged, which is tonight, March 1 at 7:00 pm. Dixon Place is proud to present Eclipsis Flamenco: Encounter of Two Worlds, an original intensely passionate dance theatrical piece documenting the historical merging of the Pre-Colombian and Spanish cultures that birthed 'mestizaje,' (mixed cultures) the very foundation of Mexican life. Under the artistic direction of the Mexican Flamenco star, Maria Elena Anaya, Eclipsis Flamenco becomes an exuberant celebration. The plasticity, strength, rhythm and eroticism that emerge from the interaction of pre-Hispanic dance and Mexican folklore reverberate in the profound chords of the guitar, percussion and 'cante flamenco.' The all-professional company's dancers, singers, and musicians trace the development of the dynamic cultural fusion of these two worlds revealing a vision of life full of pride, passion, honor, love, and sorrow. A big ol' Seattle love fest party in honor of Velocity Dance Center. Made in Seattle is Velocity's signature fundraiser of the year. Party with purpose with guests of honor Mark Haim and The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, performances by Shelby Earl, Amy O'Neal, Ezra Dickinson, Cherdonna Shinatra, Kate Wallich and Matt Drews - and an open bar with craft cocktails by Eater Seattle's Bartender of the Year Adam Fortuna. Funds raised infuse Velocity's pivotal programs - crucial for Seattle dance artists to train, create, present and develop their careers; and to build a city where dance is a vital part of the cultural landscape.
