Held in Charleston, South Carolina the festival includes American premieres of the opera Facing Goya by Michael Nyman, the play My Cousin Rachel presented by Dublin's Gate Theatre company, and a new staging of John Adams' opera El Niño directed by John La Bouchardière. The Festival will also present the opera directorial debut of Garry Hynes, the first woman to win a Tony Award for directing a play on Broadway, in a production of Leoš Janá?ek's Kát'a Kabanová. First Center for the Visual Arts Announces Launch of Blue Star Museums, Today

Today, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation's active duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2014. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. Museum of the Moving Image's First PANORAMA EUROPE Festival Set for 4/4-13

Museum of the Moving Image and The European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) will present Panorama Europe, from Friday, April 4 through Sunday, April 13, a showcase of 17 contemporary European feature films and one program of short films. Known as Disappearing Act for its first five years, the newly re-named festival continues the mission of showcasing vital European filmmaking as distribution remains challenging for foreign language films in the United States. Panorama Europe gives New York audiences access to what may be their only chance to see these acclaimed films from the festival circuit on the big screen or at all. This year's festival will take place at Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria and at the Bohemian National Hall in Manhattan. Bargemusic Here and Now Series presents “Tokyo to New York.” The concert will feature premiers composed or arranged for critically acclaimed clarinetist and hichiriki player Thomas Piercy by Tokyo- and NYC-based composers. Mr. Piercy will be joined in the concert by one of Japan's leading classical and contemporary pianists, Noritaka Ito. The music - in a wide variety of styles - includes premiers by Ned Rorem (Pulitzer- and Grammy-Award), Fernando Otero (Latin-Grammy Award); Toshio Hosokawa (Suntory Music Award), Yuichi Matsumoto (Takemitsu Award), Masatora Goya (Jerome Fund Award), and Senri Oe (major Japanese pop-star, now NYC-based jazz composer). Other premiers on the program are by Japanese composers Tomo Hirayama, Kaito Nakahori, Atsushi Yoshinaka; and premiers by NYC-based composers Trevor Bachman, Peri Mauer, Gene Pritsker, and David Wolfson. Madrid's Prado Museum Missing 885 Artworks

According to the El Pais, Spain's Museo del Prado has lost 885 artworks. According to reports, between 2008 and December 2012 the Service Deposit located 41 works of the 926. Its loss and recovery was attributed to the 'rearrangement of collections'. (more...)

Through the pairing of the exhibitions Goya: The Disasters of War, and Steve Mumford's War Journals, 2003-2013, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts offers two powerful artistic portrayals of conflict and life in a combat zone. In The Disasters of War, the eminent Spanish painter and printmaker Goya graphically depicts the ravages of war as a means of expressing his horror with humanity's capacity to inflict harm, whereas the contemporary American artist Steve Mumford takes a more journalistic approach to his paintings of 21(st) Century combat. Both exhibitions will be on view in the Frist Center's Upper-Level Galleries from February 28 through June 8, 2014. (more...)

Producers David Mirvish and Barry & Fran Weissler just announced that the Tony Award-winning Best Musical TITANIC, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and book by Peter Stone, will finally have its Canadian premiere in a brand new production directed by Thom Southerland. By special arrangement with the Banco de España, from April 22 through August 3, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will reunite for the first time four portraits painted by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) that were commissioned by the Count of Altamira, who was a director of the bank. Goya and the Altamira Family will consist of Banco de España's portrait of the Count of Altamira; the Metropolitan's beloved Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga, the so-called “Red Boy;” the beautiful portrait of Manuel's mother and sister, Condesa de Altamira and Her Daughter, María Agustina, from the Metropolitan Museum's Robert Lehman Collection; and a portrait of Manuel Osorio's brother Vicente Joaquin de Toledo, from a private collection. All four portraits were painted between 1786 and 1788, when Goya was beginning to experiment with aristocratic portraiture. A fifth portrait depicting Count Altamira's middle son, Juan María Osorio, was painted around the same time by Agustín Esteve, one of Goya's pupils, and will be lent by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
