THE LAST SHIP - the new musical with music and lyrics by 16-time Grammy Award-winner Sting and book by Tony Award-winner John Logan and Pulitzer Prize-winner Brian Yorkey opened on Broadway on October 26 with overwhelming praise for its emotionally powerful score. On December 16, Universal Music Classics will release the Original Broadway Cast Album for THE LAST SHIP, produced by the Emmy-Award winning and multi-Grammy-nominated producer Rob Mathes. The play is directed by Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello and choreographed by Olivier Award-winner Steven Hoggett, with musical direction, orchestrations and arrangements also by Rob Mathes. (more...)

This just in! The NY Times reports that Sting will be joining the cast of the musical he penned, THE LAST SHIP for a limited run from December 9th to January 10, 2015. He will be replacing actor Jimmy Nail, who is said to have 'blessed' the move. The production has been reportedly losing $75,000 a week since performances began on Sept. 29. According to the Times, it needs to gross at least $625,000 a week to break even and sustain a Broadway run. (more...)

I was able to catch a performance of THE LAST SHIP during previews. By intermission I knew I was looking forward to a cast recording of the musical, but I was largely uninterested in seeing the second act. I stuck it out and left inspired by the music and the cast's performances but entirely unmoved by the clunky book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey. (more...)

THE LAST SHIP will play its final performance on Broadway tonight, January 24 at 8 p.m., at the Neil Simon Theatre (where it has played 29 preview performances and 105 regular performances). Prior to its Broadway debut, The Last Ship had a five-week tryout in Chicago last summer, where it played 38 performances. On December 9, 2014, Sting, who composed The Last Ship's score, joined the cast in the role of Jackie White, the foreman of the shipyard who rallies his community to build one last ship meant to sail the world.
