BWW Opera Review: MASTERVOICES Strikes a Masterful Chord with Dido and Aeneas
by Christina Pandolfi - May 2, 2016

A heavenly aura flooded through the regal New York City Center this past Thursday night at the MasterVoices premiere of Henry Purcell & Nahum Tate's baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas. With a full orchestra, the MasterVoices choir, and the Doug Varone and Dancers company, this unique production created a majestic escape of light, sound, and movement for audience-goers. But the crème de la crème was the other-worldly talents of lead vocalists Kelli O' Hara & Victoria Clark, both geniuses in their own right, as they created the perfect balance of good and evil, sweet and sinful through every note. Lifeline Theatre presents Northanger Abbey, a world premiere musical with book by Lifeline Theatre ensemble member Robert Kauzlaric (Non-Equity Jeff Awards: New Adaptation, The Island of Dr. Moreau and Neverwhere), music and lyrics by George Howe (Non-Equity Jeff Award: New Work-Musical, Queen Lucia), and directed by Lifeline Theatre ensemble member Elise Kauzlaric (Non-Equity Jeff nomination: Director-Play, Mariette in Ecstasy), based on the novel by Jane Austen. Catherine Morland leaves her quiet country home for the splendors of Bath, armed only with an innocent heart and the examples of her favorite literary heroines. Immersed in a new world of parties, balls, and high society, Catherine soon finds herself caught in a web of social scheming far above her skill to master. False friends, greedy lovers, and a wealth of misunderstandings lead to the revelation that bruises of the heart can be far more painful than the imagined terrors of Gothic novels. The production runs approximately two and a half hours with one intermission. The book will be on sale in the lobby. (more...)

BWW Review: If It's Monday, It Must Be Puccini - Opolais is a Ravishing MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the Met
by Richard Sasanow - Mar 25, 2016

MADAMA BUTTERFLY was never my favorite Puccini until the current production conceived by Anthony Minghella. Before, Butterfly always seemed too submissive, Pinkerton too brutish and their child, well, too cute. Now—particularly with the current cast, headed by the magnificent Kristine Opolais as the young geisha and the dashing Roberto Alagna as the clueless Pinkerton, her American husband--seemed to put my past reservations to rest. The result was a magnificent performance, from beginning to end. (more...)

Richard Singer Pens Memoir on Drug Addiction
by BWW News Desk - Jul 5, 2016

Richard Singer will be releasing his new book, Eastern Wisdom Western Soul in August of 2016 by Devorss Publications in California. Mr. Singer is a recovering drug addict who was once homeless, hopeless, penniless and suicidal. His journey of recovery has not been easy, however he continues to spread a message of hope. Richard states that, 'I do not want to waste another second of life. I will do anything to help those suffering out there. I know how it was personally and I want to help in any possible way.' Mr. Singer's raw and miraculous story recently went viral on Facebook and it is currently awaiting publication by the world's largest online addiction resource. Richard Singer's books have won awards and he has sold the rights in many different countries throughout the world. They are also translated into several different languages. His books have been reviewed and featured in many outlets including BBC in London, Publisher's weekly, Library Journal and Martha Stewart's Body and Soul Magazine. Richard wrote and published a majority of his books while living in the Cayman Islands, however he has now returned to the United States. Mr. Singer states that, 'My books are not only for reading, they are meant to be lived.' In addition he states that, 'My passion and purpose in life is to help human beings in anyway possible.' Eastern Wisdom Western Soul is your personal guide to living a mindful life. It is easily understood, non technical, and written in a style that is easily read. It teaches the reader to access their genuine being that lies deep within the soul. This little manual provides the reader with the knowledge and practical skills to detach from the confines of the ego and dive into the Ecstasy of the authentic self. It also includes the original interpretation of the 12 steps based on Eastern philosophy. Library Journal states, 'This little book has a definite place on the library shelf. What makes his book interesting is that-in an Asian context-the quotations are pan-cultural; that is, Chinese, Buddhist, Japanese, and Hindu sources stand side by side, implying, probably rightly, that all of Asian thought, considered together, is characteristically different from Western ways of thinking.' BWW Review: Butoh Artist VANGELINE Collaborates with Contortionist JONATHAN NOSAN
by Juan Michael Porter II - Apr 5, 2016

As executed by Vangeline (who defines her work as rooted in Japanese Butoh while carrying it into the future), Butoh enhances commonplace moments riddled throughout a framework of ornate scenarios. Working from a script of staged tableaux that explore the lengths to which an abject man will go to win over an indifferent woman, I would say that '7643' certainly fulfills this mission. I have never seen Butoh executed in a theatrical setting and though a traditional play or ballet might dispatch this entire evening of events in a matter of minutes, I don't think that it would have plumbed the emotional depths quite as movingly. BWW Review: World Premiere of Ike Holter's SENDER at A Red Orchid Theatre Paints A Smart, Entertaining Portrait of Emerging Adulthood
by Rachel Weinberg - Apr 21, 2016

Ike Holter's new play SENDER, now in its world premiere production at A Red Orchid Theatre, thrives on the contrast between order and chaos. Or, more precisely in the millennial world of the play, the tension between wanting to remain in childhood and the need to face the realities of adulthood. The crux of SENDER focuses on a group of four friends struggling with this very issue, all of whom are in various stages of growing up. One of the friends disappeared a year ago and has since been presumed dead. The twist? At the beginning of the play, he shows up-and completely offsets the balance that has been established in his absence. (more...)
