BWW Reviews: Park Avenue Chamber Symphony Performs Beethoven, Barber and Bartok
by Peter Danish - Mar 4, 2014

New York City has lots of big attractions that people around the world are well aware of. But New York City also has smaller gems that don't get the same attention but still shine just as brightly. The Park Avenue Chamber Symphony is one such gem. Last Sunday afternoon, this superb ensemble led ably by Maestro David Bernard delivered an impressive performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, which many, more well-known and well-funded, orchestras would be jealous of. Maestro Bernard, who worked without benefit of a score, brought a brilliant and bright quality to the first Allegro movement. The Larghetto that followed was mannered and precisely shaped. The Scherzo, usually performed as a light and merry dance, felt a bit wayward, as the playing got a bit loose. But a strong, majestic and fiery Finale brought the first half to a satisfying conclusion. The Second Symphony was composed during the summer and fall of 1802 and it signaled the end of Beethoven's 'early period.' For the composer, this was a time of great despair because he was finally realizing that his deafness could not be cured and would indeed be a permanent affliction. That despair is deeply engrained in the work, and the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony dug deep and tapped into that despair and communicated it amiably to the audience. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Paul Taylor 60th Anniversary Marathon
by Melia Kraus-har - Mar 17, 2014

The celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of Paul Taylor's choreographic career filled the stage and the screen - computer screens that is, with announcements regarding the company's future trajectory - in the way that only Paul Taylor can. The choreographer's choices, both in his dances and dialogue, cover the spectrum of ideologies. Throughout his career, Taylor allowed himself to be in the moment, whatever the moment, and continues to contribute in a very important, seemingly endless conversation: how modern dance maintains its relevance alongside contemporary dance without losing its heritage. A few Taylor twists this season: six dollar tickets, added alumni performance, and anticipated diversified repertory with works from other choreographers. (more...)

BWW Reviews: WSC Avant Bard's Exquisite ORLANDO at Arlington's Theatre on the Run
by Andrew White - Mar 1, 2014

The pleasures of WSC Avant-Bard's production are many, beginning with Sara Barker's brilliant embodiment of Virginia Woolf's hero/heroine. One of English literature's most enduring labors of love, the stage version of 'Orlando' also gives us a glimpse of Sarah Ruhl early in her career, adapting Woolf's classic novel at a time when she was too young to be intimidated by an iconic feminist work. Director Amber Jackson has assembled a truly talented ensemble who give audiences a no-holds-barred performance not to be missed. (more...)
