Huntington Theatre Company, the 2013 recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award and Boston magazine's Best Theatre of 2013 and 2014, announced today the world premiere production of A Confederacy of Dunces, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by John Kennedy Toole, directed by David Esbjornson (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and All My Sons) and featuring Nick Offerman of NBC's "Parks and Recreation." The Suzanne Farrell Ballet, the Kennedy Center's own ballet company, will engage in an artistic partnership with Theatre Ballet Moscow in February 2015 to perform George Balanchine'sMonumentum Pro Gesualdo. The Suzanne Farrell Ballet will also perform Balanchine's Movements for Piano and Orchestra. Theatre Ballet Moscow will complete the program with pieces by George Aleksidze and Paul Mejia. Through this artistic partnership, Theatre Ballet Moscow will have the opportunity to take classes and learn Balanchine's choreography from Ms. Farrell, one of Balanchine's foremost interpreters, and rehearse with The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Richmond Ballet will welcome one of the world's most popular ballets back to the River City, as Nicolas Beriozoff's Don Quixote, presented by Morgan Stanley, is set to run February 20th through 22nd at the Carpenter Theatre. It is also with great anticipation that Richmond Ballet prepares to welcome two principal dancers from the National Ballet of China, Wang Ye and Ma Xiaodong who are scheduled to perform the ballet's lead roles. Ms. Wang and Mr. Ma's guest artist appearance in Richmond is the first stop in the Ballet's year-long Road to China cultural exchange program that will carry the company through to a tour of China in May of this year. Pivot Arts and Loyola University's Department of Fine and Performing Arts (DFPA) continue their partnership with a unique Performing Arts Incubator Program for artists, which includes mentorships for Loyola undergraduates throughout January and February 2015. The program provides companies and individual artists time and space to develop work that is innovative and often blurs the boundaries between music, dance, theater and other disciplines. The Brevard Music Center (BMC) will open its 2015 season on Saturday, June 20, with superstar pianist André Watts and BMC Principal Guest Conductor JoAnn Falletta in an all-Beethoven program. Watts burst upon the music world at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein chose him to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic. He has since enjoyed a celebrated 50 year career that has taken him across the globe to concertize with major orchestras and perform in the world's musical capitals. Watts has played before European royalty and international heads of government and has received the Avery Fisher Prize, the National Medal of Arts, and was the youngest person ever to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Yale University. André Watts will perform Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with Maestra Falletta and the Brevard Music Center Orchestra on a program to include Leonore Overture No. 3 and the Seventh Symphony. The season concludes on Sunday, August 2, as Maestro Lockhart and the BMCO perform Mahler's powerful Symphony No. 1 – “The Titan.” (more...)

Today in 2002, the fourth Broadway revival of Man of La Mancha opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 304 performances. Man of La Mancha is a musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh. It is adapted from Wasserman's non-musical 1959 teleplay I, Don Quixote, which was in turn inspired by Miguel de Cervantes's seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. It tells the story of the 'mad' knight, Don Quixote, as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.The original 1965 Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical has been revived four times on Broadway, becoming one of the most enduring works of musical theatre. (more...)

Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence may not always get the same level of appreciation or respect that is bestowed upon its big brother, Providence Performing Arts Center. Underappreciated or not, The Vets, as it's called, brings in its fair share of wonderful performances and fabulous productions. This past weekend's holiday concert with Linda Eder was easily a highlight of the season for everyone in attendance.
