BWW Review: With TWO GUYS AND A GRAND at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, Cabaret Veterans Jim Brochu & Steve Ross Evoke the Spirit of Music Halls
by Alix Cohen - May 28, 2016

Veteran performers Jim Brochu and Steve Ross have known one another since the 1970s, an era when New York was filled with piano bars, cabaret rooms, and nightclubs. Pause for a deep, wistful sigh. Framing their new show, Two Guys and a Grand (last Wednesday night at the Laurie Beechman Theatre), in the kind of friendly antagonism and winking shtick popular during vaudeville, the two very different performers manage to be both broad and classy. BWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Blends Realism, Romanticism at Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - Jan 6, 2016

There is something both familiar and jarring about the brand new North American tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, running at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, January 10th. While the beloved musical about a nun turned governess still has all of the iconic songs by Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics), including 'My Favorite Things,' 'Do-Re-Mi (complete with solfege hand signs),' and the title song, this production focuses more intently on the real-world danger that the Trapp family faced leading up to the outbreak of World War II. There's nothing like a good musical revue - replete with well-chosen songs, performed by a talented coterie of professional performers who are ably supported by a cast of fresh-faced youngsters showing off their burgeoning talents in concert with their more seasoned counterparts - and The Collective (Nashville's newest theatrical endeavor aka The Music City Theatre Collective) certainly delivers the goods with the debut of Showstoppers, presented this weekend at St. Philip's Episcopal Church's Dimmick Hall in Donelson. BWW Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC Is Sweet But Not Saccharine
by Natalie de la Garza - Feb 22, 2016

THE SOUND OF MUSIC, directed by Jack O'Brien, finds the perfect balance for Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic story, a story that can be sickeningly saccharine in the wrong hands and therefore easily dismissed. O'Brien's vision is a bit more weighty and grounded and complemented brilliantly by the performances and work of Scenic Designer Douglas W. Schmidt and Lighting Designer Natasha Katz. (more...)

BWW Review: Undeniably Tuneful THE SOUND OF MUSIC at The Fox Theatre
by Chris Gibson - Apr 29, 2016

Rodgers and Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is still popular today, and there's really no need to wonder why. The songs are undeniably familiar, and the story and characters go through a number of compelling moments. However, it does require a good, solid cast and sharp direction to live up to the expectations of all those folks who have seen the 1965 film over and over and over again. Thankfully, this touring company currently playing The Fox Theatre (through May 8, 2016) is more than up to the task. This classic still has its many charms. and holds up remarkably well despite its age and overexposure in various forms over the years. (more...)
