by Larry O'Brien - Nov 20, 2015

Your intrepid correspondent saw two plays this weekend, Andrew Case's THE RANT at the Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket and NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH by Alan Ayckbourn Upstage at 2nd Story Theatre in Warren. Each of these plays dealt a violent death at the hands of the police. THE RANT is a powerful, drama about the dark recesses of murder and unknowability, while NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is a light-hearted romp through the dark recesses of middle-class paranoia. I enjoyed them both very much, but then I'm middle-class with dark recesses of my own. (more...)

'We are Russian Jews', my father would always tell me when I asked where we came from. From a very young age, I was curious about history; where people and things came from, origins, and remnants. Growing up in the US, I was used to the idea of the big melting pot - that a lot people here came from somewhere else for a better life. A lot of us, including myself, have very mixed backgrounds, and it can be overwhelming to piece together the puzzle that is your ancestry. Thankfully, we live in the golden age of the World Wide Web, and our collective curiosity and quest for a sense of identity and meaning has resulted in the creation of wonderful resources like ancestry.com. If the term “up-and-coming actor” needed a poster child, last year I would have said Eddie Redmayne would be a perfect match, owing to his Oscar win as Stephen Hawking in the acclaimed film THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. Now, I would say the 34-year old British actor has moved from the up-and-coming category into the column of established film actors. This Oscar season, Redmayne will once again face the red carpet and the possibility of leading actor Academy Award for his role in THE DANISH GIRL as the artist Einar who faces a personal conflict and the expectations of society when he transitions to Lily in the early 20th century. Even if you have not yet made it to the Marquis Theatre, chances are that you have still seen Josh Segarra in action this year. Television fans might know him as lovable goofball Bill Cepeda from USA's Sirens or as Justin Voight from NBC's Chicago P.D. Or maybe you caught him starring alongside comedy It-Girl Amy Schumer in her Golden Globe-nominated mega-hit, Trainwreck. Now he's busy making this Broadway season spicer, starring as Emilio Estefan in the hit new musical On Your Feet!. This is far from Josh's first go at New York theater (he has previously starred in such shows as LYSISTRATA JONES and DOGFIGHT), but it's certainly his first major role in the Broadway spotlight. He just checked in with BroadwayWorld about what's been going on at the Marquis since opening night, how he is handling the extra leading man pressure, and why his 2015 was truly epic. (more...)

BWW Review: Let the Youth Be Told in APA's New Hit SOCIAL SECURITYBWW Review: Let the Youth Be Told in APA's New Hit SOCIAL SECURITY
by Kristen Morale - Apr 11, 2016

There are quite a few advantages of getting old, despite what many people may believe: the well-worn worries of youth are whisked away in the leveled way more mature people live their lives, self-dictated rules and personal boundaries are set as people come into their own and emotions are at bay as people gradually accept and even embrace the monotone way in which their lives are lived. Youth can still be kept alive and may even be sought after, but that shouldn't be too strenuous a task, right? Ha, no. After seeing the workings of the Academy of Performing Art's newest production of Social Security, where insecurities run rampant, youth is a perpetual theme in hilarious unforeseen ways and basically nothing is secure, the irony of this show's title alone is bound to excite and surprise anyone one believes that youth cannot be rekindled in the old at heart.
