by BWW News Desk - Jul 12, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—July 10, 2015—It is a night of spicy, riveting music and dance featuring salsa, Cuban rhythms and the sounds of Spain, when Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, delivers the third concert of Summer Festival 2015. The evening is chock-full of hot-tempered tunes, including Ravel's “Bolero,” featuring the most famous drumbeat in classical music and immortalized in the movie “10”; Rimsky-Korsakov's sparkling orchestral painting of Spain, Capriccio Espagnol, full of passionate tunes and brilliant colors that have made it a smash-hit concert favorite; the short but potent “Ritual Fire Dance” from de Falla's ballet, “El amor brujo”; and excerpts from Bizet's alluring “Carmen,” sung by opera star, mezzo-soprano Milena Kiti?.  The band JT & Friends then delivers high-octane entertainment on the second half, which includes Bizet's “Farandole” from L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 and Bernstein's heart-pumping “America” from the classic film, “West Side Story.” Completing the mix are dancers, Salsa king Bobby Rivas, singer Beau Williams, and music that includes Barry Mann's “On Broadway,” Flores' rowdy “Tequila” and more.  (more...)

Celebrating 82 Years, The Bergen County Players (BCP) presents Bell, Book and Candle. In a nutshell: Girl meets Boy. Girl loses Boy. Girl gets Boy. Sure, that's a classic plot device, but what's so special about it? Well, how about because the girl is a witch and the boy is a mortal? Sound familiar? It should, because this magical rom-com, which originally starred Rex Harrison on Broadway and then Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak in the popular film, eventually became the genesis of television's memorable comedy "Bewitched". KAFKA'S QUEST to Run 2/26-3/15 at Theater for the New CityKAFKA'S QUEST to Run 2/26-3/15 at Theater for the New City
by BWW News Desk - Jan 26, 2015

'Kafka's Quest, a.k.a. Kafka/Samsa' is a quasi-realistic play by the late playwright Lu Hauser that imagines the family life of Gregor Samsa, the tragic victim of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis,' and his friendship with an historic Yiddish Theater actor and actress in Prague, prior to the events of the famed novella. Set in Prague in 1912, it portrays Gregor Samsa (the name Kafka personified himself with in the book) as torn between his father, who wants to keep him on the straight and narrow with a full time job, and his friendship with artists of the Yiddish Theater, who want him to join and write for them. His father's bankruptcy forces Gregor to become the breadwinner of the family, which has been forced to take in two mysterious lodgers to make ends meet. The back and forth between the two poles of Gregor's life will culminate in 'The Metamorphosis.' Theater for the New City will present the play's world premiere February 26 to March 15, directed by Manfred Bormann. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Magical, Mystical, Mischievous MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Is A Midwinter DelightBWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Magical, Mystical, Mischievous MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Is A Midwinter Delight
by Jill Schafer - Feb 17, 2015

Yesterday I sat on the famous thrust stage of the Guthrie Theater and watched a bunch of soldiers, lovers, and fairies dance, sing, fly, converse, love, hate, and generally cavort around in a bare circular space. Or was it all a dream? Such is the Guthrie's latest production of perhaps Shakespeare's best loved romantic comedy, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, that after three hours of spellbinding theater, you're not quite sure if what you saw just happened, or perhaps, as Puck suggests in his epilogue, it was all just a dream. Artistic Director Joe Dowling has returned to an old favorite in his final season at the Guthrie, assembling a gorgeous and talented cast of local favorites with a few national talents thrown in. It's no wonder that he returned to this show; this MIDSUMMER is a dream of a production, with plenty of spectacle in the form of dancing, flying, singing fairies, humor in the form of typical Shakesperean hijinks, and heart in this sweet romance that ends with a neat happily ever after. Everything about it is truly a delight. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Grand Production of THE CRUCIBLE is a Compelling, Well-Executed ClassicBWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Grand Production of THE CRUCIBLE is a Compelling, Well-Executed Classic
by Jill Schafer - Apr 23, 2015

Arthur Miller's 1953 play THE CRUCIBLE is a classic of the American theater, and dramatizes one of the greatest failings of the American, or rather pre-American, judicial system. During the infamous Salem witch trials of the late 17th Century, twenty people were put to death for the crime of witchcraft, following a long history of the execution of 'witches' in Europe. Arthur Miller explores the larger themes of this horrible incident through a very personal story of one affected family, making the play at once intimate and epic. Despite being over 60 years old, the themes of religious fanaticism, mob mentality, and persecution of people who are different are sadly as current as they were during the McCarthy era when the play was written. The Guthrie's grand production of this classic with a cast chock-full of talent is truly something to behold. (more...)

Continuity Expert Adam-Michael James Publishes THE BEWITCHED CONTINUUMContinuity Expert Adam-Michael James Publishes THE BEWITCHED CONTINUUM
by BWW News Desk - Apr 21, 2015

Bewitched, the classic supernatural sitcom that ran from 1964 to 1972 and revolved around Darrin Stephens, a mortal man who married Samantha, a beautiful witch, is still popular five decades after its premiere - so much so, that NBC has green-lit a continuation that is slated to air later this year. For all that, Bewitched, which has legions of fans all over the world, has never had a proper reference guide. Continuity expert Adam-Michael James recently corrected this pop culture oversight by releasing The Bewitched Continuum: The Ultimate Linear Guide to the Classic TV Series. James has tackled matters of entertainment-related continuity for Hollywood studios and soapcentral.com. In The Bewitched Continuum, he tapped into that expertise to compare and contrast the 254 episodes of the series, plus explore its world of witchcraft. 'There are quite a few wonderful Bewitched books out there that cover the behind-the-scenes aspects of the show,' James points out, 'but it's the fiction and characters and magic that people really love. So my focus is on that, the storyline's overall consistencies and inconsistencies; it's meant to carry the celebration of Bewitched past its 50th anniversary and inspire people to look at the show in a fun new way.' The Bewitched Continuum has been praised by leading radio shows Pop Culture Tonight and TV Confidential, and Bewitched director Richard Michaels calls the book 'a great companion for every Bewitched fan, with insights even we didn't realize.' Chris York, son of Dick York, who played Darrin for the show's first five seasons, adds that James' offering is a 'must-read.' On top of cataloging each episode, James reveals that his 600-page book contains show photos and running totals of key Bewitched moments, as well as his concept for the finale the series never had. Noted pop culture expert Herbie J Pilato, whose literary output ranges from Bewitched Forever to Glamour, Gidgets, and the Girl Next Door, provided The Bewitched Continuum's foreword and served as James' editor. As to the enduring popularity of Bewitched, James told entertainment blog Cinephiled that 'the show got me to believe in magic - a feeling we can all have within ourselves that anything is possible.' That's a quality James did his best to pour into The Bewitched Continuum, which is available on Amazon and CreateSpace. Other works by Adam-Michael James include the musical drama The Nine Lives of L.M. Montgomery, background actor how-to Extra Extra, and Undo the Deed, a time travel story with a child abuse theme. He also enjoys writing songs and performing on stage, his favorite role being Lumière in Beauty and the Beast. James currently makes his home in Prince Edward Island, Canada, where he pens commentaries about daytime drama The Bold and the Beautiful on soapcentral.com. BWW Recap: No Sympathy for the 'Devil's Mark' on Tonight's OUTLANDERBWW Recap: No Sympathy for the 'Devil's Mark' on Tonight's OUTLANDER
by Kara McCoy - Apr 17, 2015

It may be a bit early to call it, having only reached the third of an eight-episode long homestretch, but I'm going to do it: the latter half of OUTLANDER's premiere season has exceeded all of my expectations. I'm not totally sure what they were to begin with, but they've all been tossed out the window by this point anyway. Already this show has topped itself, with each new episode since the September mid-season finale proving to be stronger than the last. Tonight's installment, intriguingly titled 'The Devil's Mark' was--yup, yup, I'm doing it--the best so far. I'm probably going to kick myself next week, if we keep up this momentum, but I'm just too darn excited about it. (more...)
