BWW Review: Off-Broadway's Hit HAM Brings Mega-Talented SAM HARRIS to LGBT Hollywood for Three WeeksBWW Review: Off-Broadway's Hit HAM Brings Mega-Talented SAM HARRIS to LGBT Hollywood for Three Weeks
by Don Grigware - Jan 29, 2016

In his early days circa 1984, when he won 13 consecutive weeks on TV's Star Search, Sam Harris was flatly denied work on TV and in film because he was labeled 'too theatrical'. This quality - and I say quality - is what makes a performer exceptional; it sets him apart from the crowd, separating the men from the boys, so to speak. But casting people and agents frankly did not know what to do with him; his enormous talent defied categorization. He can sing, he can dance, he can act the bejesus out of a piece, injecting so much raw energy and passion into it that its substance literally leaps off the stage, directly into our hearts. Well, times did change. He has worked on television and on Broadway to great acclaim, and now he is back onstage once more with his autobiographical show HAM: A Musical Memoir for a limited run at the Renberg Theatre of LGBT, Hollywood through February 7 only. BWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Outstanding New Musical GEORAMABWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Outstanding New Musical GEORAMA
by Chris Gibson - Jan 25, 2016

Thanks to the developmental work that occurred during The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Ignite! Play Festival in 2014 we now have the opportunity to witness the fruit of their labors; the world premier of a very entertaining new musical called GEORAMA. This play tells a fascinating story that is truly a forgotten piece of history that deserves to be celebrated. This production is staged in the Studio Theatre of the Loretto-Hilton, and that adds additional atmosphere and intimacy that makes the story connect in a uniquely vibrant manner. As an avid film fan, I'd read a bit about the history of 'motion pictures', and found countless early examples of flip books, and the like, but nothing prepared me for the sadly neglected tale of John Banvard, who created a virtual recreation of the wonders of the Mississippi River on a scrolling canvas that stretched for miles. That's quite a feat, and so is this staging. I cannot recommend it highly enough! It's truly a show that deserves an audience both young and old to appreciate, or become aware of, something that was truly as magical as the spectacle this artist created. (more...)

BWW Interview: Scott Dreier of DORIS AND ME at Simi Valley Cultural Arts CenterBWW Interview: Scott Dreier of DORIS AND ME at Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center
by Cary Ginell - Jan 21, 2016

It's not often when a person is able to develop their own stage show about their idol, but for the past four years, actor/singer Scott Dreier has done that very thing, when, in 2011, he started paying tribute to former actress/singer Doris Day. Dreier has toured all over the U.S. with Doris and Me, playing on the West Coast, where he makes his home, to venues on the East Coast. For many years before Doris and Me, the Southern California native was a performer in voiceovers, in theater, and on television, focusing mainly on family shows on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Scott has also been a featured vocalist with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra, has accompanied Barbra Streisand in concert, and has numerous television appearances to his credit. Devoted to charitable causes, Dreier designated the proceeds from his first CD, Scott Dreier, to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. On the album, he sang a duet on 'Suddenly, Seymour' from Little Shop of Horrors with actress Katy Sagal (Married With Children). Dreier has performed in twelve productions of that show. One of his latest efforts, whose proceeds benefit the Doris Day Animal Foundation, is a duet with jazz singer Jane Monheit on Doris Day's hit, 'Everybody Loves a Lover.' Dreier is appearing in Doris and Me at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center this weekend, and we got a chance to visit with him and talk about his idol, who at 91, is living in comfortable retirement in Carmel-By-the-Sea near Monterey, California. Stark Bro's Nurseries & Orchards Co. Announces 200th Anniversary BookStark Bro's Nurseries & Orchards Co. Announces 200th Anniversary Book
by BWW News Desk - Dec 17, 2015

The world's oldest fruit-tree nursery announced today that 200 Years and Growing: The Story of Stark Bro's Nurseries & Orchards Co. will go on sale January 1, 2016. Stark Bro's discovered both the Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apple. In celebration of two hundred years in business - a remarkable feat for any company - this book recounts the history of the world's oldest fruit-tree nursery, founded in 1816. The men behind this remarkable enterprise were a formidable group of strong-willed personalities. The family business often crossed lines with the nursery business, and egos, money squabbles and bragging rights were all part of the equation. There were also moments of genius and displays of wisdom, leadership and kindness not often seen in the corporate world. With all of these attendant variables in play, it is a true wonder the company not only still stands, but thrives. Ken Lane, Chief Marketing Officer, made the announcement. 'I found this book to be an education on our past, an affirmation of what we are doing in the present, and a primer as to what we need to do to secure the next 200 years,' says Lane. Says Martha Sue Smith, president of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Area Historical Museum, 'This book, complete with its pictorial history, epitomizes the impact the company has had on the community and ultimately, the world. Ms. Zotta has precisely recorded the history of Stark Bro's, and the Museum will preserve it.' 'From the first apple tree planted in Missouri, to the iconic business' embracing of the digital age, this book is a revealing walk through rural Americana,' says Louisiana mayor Bart Niedner. 'It is an easy read that can readily be enjoyed in whole or by the slice.' In hardcover laminate format, 200 Years and Growing: The Story of Stark Bro's Nurseries & Orchards Co. will have a simultaneous e-book and will be available for U. S. distribution through IngramSpark. About Stark Bro's Nurseries and Orchards Co. Stark Bro's Nurseries and Orchards Co., founded in 1816, is a grower and distributor of fruit and nut trees as well as grape vines, berry plants and other horticultural products. Stark Bro's is synonymous with the Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apples, which account for nearly 40% of all worldwide apple sales. Stark's corporate offices, retail Garden Center, main test orchards and nurseries are located in Louisiana, Missouri. Nursery stock is also grown at a branch location near Atlas, Illinois and will be supplemented with our New York-based growers. The company serves both consumers (through its website and catalog) and commercial buyers (through its commercial sales division). For complete information, please visit http://www.StarkBros.com. About The Author: LeAnn Zotta has spent the last 30 years working as a successful non-fiction author, editor, journalist, copywriter and graphic designer. She has written, edited and ghostwritten a dozen books and has penned hundreds of articles for magazines, newspapers and corporations in the U.S. and abroad. As an ardent observer of the past, she considers it a privilege to reside in historic Williamsburg, Virginia. (more...)
