Odyssey Theatre Ensemble has announced "Circa'69!" an 18-month retrospective beginning in June, 2019 that will celebrate its founding, 50 years ago, by artistic director Ron Sossi, who has remained steadily at the helm since the company's first production in 1969.

What makes a Broadway theatre? Technically any venue with 500 seats or more, located along Broadway in New York City's Theatre District is a Broadway theatre, and the art that is produced in these special places is widely considered the highest form of theatrical entertainment in the world. Today, forty-one theatres are technically Broadway houses, each with their own rich history. The first great rock musical, it has some of the most rousing and soulful songs ever written for the stage, including 'Let the Sun Shine In,' 'Easy to be Hard,' 'Good Morning Starshine,' 'Aquarius' and the infectious title song, 'Hair.'

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the full company for the world premiere of Tazewell Thompson's inspirational a cappella music infused play, Jubilee. Inspired by the world-renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers, this uplifting new work chronicles the bold African American ensemble as they travel the world, captivating kings, queens and audiences with hymns and spiritual songs supported by their rich voices. Written and directed by Thompson with vocal arrangements and music direction by Dianne Adams McDowell, Jubilee runs April 26 - June 2, 2019 in the Kreeger Theater.

Sam & Dave's 1967 hit single “Soul Man'; the classic radio western “Gunsmoke”; Ritchie Valens' groundbreaking 1958 sensation “La Bamba”; the revolutionary 1968 Broadway musical “Hair”; and Neil Diamond's 1969 “Sweet Caroline,” which became a popular sports anthem, are the newest recordings inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden today named these and 20 other recordings as aural treasures worthy of preservation because of their cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the nation's recorded sound heritage.

Having seen the musical HAMILTON when it was in Los Angeles, like many others I learned more important details about the founding fathers while watching it than I felt I had ever learned in school. Lin-Manuel Miranda who created that uber-successful musical in 2015, has said that 1776 THE MUSICAL, written in 1969, during another time of political and social unrest in the United States, has 'one of the best books-if not the best-ever written for musical theatre.' And now I can say I certainly agree with him. La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and McCoy Rigby Entertainment present the award-winning and revolutionary 1776 THE MUSICAL at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya), February 8 through 10. 1776 THE MUSICAL, the Tony Award winner for Best Musical (1969) and has music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and book by Peter Stone. It is directed by Glenn Casale with musical direction by Jeff Rizzo.

Two theatre greats died in December 2018, both with history at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.  Dancer and teacher Blanche Lund died on December 1, 2018, and composer Galt MacDermot died on December 17, 2018. Because of the holidays the theatre did not have a chance to properly mark the passing of these remarkable people. We will do so now.

Actor/Director Charles Weldon, who was Artistic Director of The Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) since 2005, died December 7 at Mt. Sinai Hospital, NYC. He was 78.

Katy Lipson of Aria Entertainment and Joseph Houston and William Whelton of Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester are delighted to announce Hope Aria Productions' 2019 Season. The Season will open on 2 March with the UK premiere of a new version of the Stephen Schwartz musical RAGS. From 27 September, Tracie Bennett will star in the title role in Jerry Herman's much loved musical MAME, and the season will be completed by a new musical, THE ASTONISHING TIMES OF TIMOTHY CRATCHIT, from 22 November.

Circle Players continues to celebrate of its 2018-19 season with tonight's opening of Hair, the 1969 tribal love-rock musical that made musical theater history with its premiere 50 years ago. Directed by Jason Lewis and choreographed by Tosha Pendergrast, the eagerly anticipated production features a cast of Nashville's favorite actors, with Nicholas Page as Claude.

Porchlight Music Theatre begins its sixth season of Chicago's "lost" musicals in staged concert series with Porchlight Revisits 1776, music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and book by Peter Stone with direction by Artistic Director Michael Weber, musical direction by Jeremy Ramey and musical staging by Michelle Lauto.

Today, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts (LBC) announced five new shows that will join its diverse 2018-19 season. Tony Bennett, 19-time Grammy Award-winning musician, will perform at LBC Tuesday, December 11, 2018; the popular comedy show Whose Live Anyway returns on Sunday, February 17, 2019; American folk legend Arlo Guthrie performs in Santa Rosa as part of The Alice Restaurant's 50th Anniversary Tour on Thursday, March 28, 2019; Friends! The Musical Parody also returns to LBC on Tuesday, April 30, 2019; and American roots musician Keb' Mo' plays at the Center on Thursday, May 16, 2019. 

When David Ivers was named Artistic Director at Arizona Theatre Company, he made a commitment to spotlight Arizona artists: those who live here, were born here, return to or move here or who write about Arizona or our surrounding region. 

NBC's Live broadcast of the hit rock-musical HAIR, directed by Diane Paulus and Alex Rudzinski, is set to air May 19, 2019, TV Line has reported.

Producer Madeleine Foster Bersin is proud to announce initial casting for 1969: The Second Man, created by Jacob Brandt (The Great Glaciation), featuring music & lyrics by Brandt, a book by Dan Giles (Breeders), and directed by Jaki Bradley (Good Men Wanted), as part of Next Door at NYTW.

Best remembered for his show stopping appearances in HAIR, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and as the original Dr Frank'n'furter in the Australian Production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, actor, writer and director Reg Livermore returns to the stage at the Ensemble Theatre for his one-man show, THE WIDOW UNPLUGGED in July.

REPRISE 2.0 (led by Producing Artistic Director Marcia Seligson), in association with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Department of Theater (UCLA TFT) chaired by Brian Kite, presents its inaugural production of Sweet Charity.  Directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall with musical direction by Gerald Sternbach, the classic Broadway hit plays through July 1 at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. Live @ Peck Pavilion returns to the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts grounds this summer. The season will run from July 5 through August 25 with each day of the series featuring a different program focus. Optimist Theatre: Shakespeare in the Park returns Peck Pavilion from July 5-21 with their presentation of King Lear featuring local favorite Jim Pickering in the title role. New to Live at Peck this year is Tribute Band Thursday. All events in Peck Pavilion are free and open to the public.

BroadwayWorld has just learned that following on the heels of NBC's critically acclaimed rock musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert' comes the true original rock musical, 'Hair Live!,' which will be broadcast in the spring of 2019 in front of a live audience. 

In the movie, 'FIELD OF DREAMS,' Annie Kinsella attacks a conservative member of the school board who wants to ban the writings of Terrance Mann with the line, 'I think if you had just experienced the Sixties ...'

2017 Regional Theatre Tony Award Recipient Dallas Theater Center (DTC) announced that Christopher Llewyn Ramirez will be joining the Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company at the beginning of the 2018-2019 season. 

Arizona Broadway Theatre presents HAIR. The beat goes on but the message has faded. Director and choreographer pulls out all the plugs to energize the 50 year old musical. On stage now through March 25th.
