CABARET LIFE NYC: On the Eve of the 18th Annual Long Island Al Jolson Festival - The Confessions of a Jolson Fanatic
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 12, 2014

The 18th Long Island Al Jolson Festival coming up on August 16 is a whole-day affair featuring film presentations, lectures, memorabilia displays and sales, and a performance--'The Heart of Al Jolson'--by singer and Staten Island native Tony Babino (photo below), who can sing Jolson songs like, well, you ain't heard nothin' yet. The other day, like clockwork, I received my yearly invitation to attend from Oceanside, LI resident Jan Hernstat, who for the past 10 years has been the President of the 62-year-old International Al Jolson Society (which was formed in early 1950, a few months before Jolson died), an organization with a worldwide membership hovering around 1,000. I am proud to say that for 30 years, I've been one of them. I'm even prouder to say that I've been an Al Jolson fanatic for much longer. Here's my story about how it happened.

CABARET LIFE NYC: Two Charming Young Women Performers--Carly Ozard and Nikki MacCallum--Conquer the Challenge of the Personalized Tribute Show at The Duplex
by Stephen Hanks - Jun 23, 2014

The biggest challenge in personalizing a tribute show is when the set list is structured to tell a story about the performer's life. Those songs better be good, that life better be interesting, and that storytelling patter better be clever, humorous, and self-deprecating or an audience (let alone a reviewer) will tune you out quicker than a liberal accidentally hitting FOX News on the remote. I recently saw two different shows at The Duplex from enchanting young women performers—Carly Ozard and Nikki MacCallum--who deftly managed to weave their love of a singer (Bette Midler for Ozard) or a songbook (Kander & Ebb for MacCallum) into a tale of life journey and personal growth to produce charming and entertaining shows.

IN BORROWED HOUSES by Frances Fuller is Available Now
by BWW News Desk - Feb 11, 2014

According to CBS news, more than 270 Americans were killed during the Lebanon civil war, which occurred from 1975 through 1990. Many other Americans were kidnapped, many of them missionaries who had traveled to Lebanon to provide shelter, food, medical assistance and spiritual help to the people there. Frances Fuller and her husband, Wayne, were two such missionaries. 'In Borrowed Houses: a true story of love and faith amidst war in Lebanon' (published by WestBow Press) is Frances' riveting account of living in Lebanon during the dangerous civil war. Many headline events of the time impacted the Fullers' lives and are vividly described, though the book becomes, not a history, but a profound spiritual memoir.

BWW Reviews: For the Love of a Child
by Kristen Morale - Feb 3, 2014

Parents do not have to be told to provide unconditional love and care to the children they bring into this world, nor do they have to be reminded of the treasure they covet when these children bring mostly joy and laughter into a home that once belonged only to them. Even though much of their lifestyle has been drastically changed because of these treasures, as all attention and responsibility is now directed at their well-being, this love cannot be disputed as something other than beautiful. Now, does the same hold true when a child is not one's own? After seeing the opening night performance of The Sun Shines East at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre, there is little doubt as to this holding true, and the struggle of one couple to adopt a baby, to whom they have already given their undying love and affection upon first holding her, makes for a beautiful, heartfelt story that deems the presence of children in our lives that much more precious.

Robert Stanek Announces 'Catching a Cup of Sunshine' on iBooks
by Christina Mancuso - Jan 22, 2014

'Catching a Cup of Sunshine' is available for the first time in an HD edition for iBooks and available in the Apple iTunes store. The book was created and designed especially for iBooks by author Robert Stanek. Robert Stanek's ground-breaking Bugville Critters books are captivating the imaginations of young readers around the world. Author Robert Stanek has received hundreds of letters from young readers asking about Buster. Robert Stanek quietly worked on the Bugville Critters for 15 years, satisfied with only the gleeful cheers, laughs and giggles of his children who delighted to hear his tales of Bugville and a little bug called Buster. As his children got older, they urged him to get the books published so other children could enjoy them as much as they did, and that's exactly what Robert Stanek set out to do in 2004. As a young child, Robert Stanek's family was very poor. He was one of five children raised by a single mom. Books allowed Robert to escape the poverty and violence that filled his early life. 'Books taught me much about the world,' says author Robert Stanek. 'They gave me windows to exotic places, learning, and new worlds. I was one of those geeky kids who belonged to the book a day club. I lived as much in books as anywhere. The community library and the library at school were second homes to me.' In 'Catching a Cup of Sunshine,' the precocious lovable Buster tries to understand the meaning of a day and ends up learning all about the days of the week and the months of the year. 'Robert takes readers through Buster's hilarious adventure and catching sunshine in a cup is just the beginning,' says Jeannie Kim, publisher at Reagent Press. 'Children reading the book whether alone or with their parents help will learn a lot about time. The approach is innovative and I've never seen another book like it.' Robert Stanek has been dreaming up stories since he was a boy, but it was only since the early 1990's that his work began to get published. As a technology journalist, Robert (writing as William R. Stanek) has written for PC Magazine, Dr. Dobbs, TechNet Magazine and a variety of other leading magazines. As a technology writer, he's has written for Simon & Schuster, Random House, Macmillan, Pearson, Microsoft, O'Reilly and other publishers. Of that, he says, 'My many technical articles and technical books have helped millions of readers learn essential job skills and stay competitive. That's important, especially in these troubling economic times. 'My children's books are helping kids learn essential life skills. The Bugville books provide stories that address real issues and challenges children face as they start school, make friends, and learn about the world around them. Each book provides a positive lesson about life, friendship, family, our world, the natural world of which we are all a part, and our environment.' For more information, visit www.bugvillecritters.com and www.reagentpress.com. About the author Robert Stanek is the author of over 150 books. His epic series Ruin Mist Chronicles includes Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, and Mark of the Dragon and was also released for young adults as The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches #1 - #4 and In the Service of Dragons #1 - #4. He is also well-known for his Bugville Critters children's picture book series. His books have been bestsellers on Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, Audible.com, and Apple iTunes.
