Montego Glover to Join New York Pops for SING SING SWING at Carnegie Hall, 11/1

On Friday, November 1 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, The New York Pops under the direction of Music DirectorSteven Reineke is joined by Tony Award nominee Montego Glover and clarinetist Dave Bennett for Sing Sing Swing, an all-swing music program that harkens back to the era when big bands ruled the dance floor. The program also pays tribute to the 75th anniversary of Benny Goodman's storied debut at Carnegie Hall with his jazz orchestra. The concert, which took place on January 16, 1938, helped to elevate the status of swing music in the US and beyond, and included some of the brightest jazz luminaries of the day, including Count Basie and members of the Duke Ellington orchestra. The recording of Goodman's performance at Carnegie Hall remains one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.

For one unforgettable night, this mini festival celebrates Gypsy swing of the 1930s in unexpected ways under the artistic direction of guitarist and composer Stephane Wrembel(Fontainebleu, France/NY). Wrembel, who has been called 'a revelation' by Rolling Stone and who composed the music for Woody Allen's last two films will be joined by Kamlo (Nantes, France) who interprets Django via the Mediterranean, and Flamenco and Gypsy swing-style guitar master Alfonso Ponticelli(Chicago). Summertime in Austin seems like the perfect place and time for a happy-go-lucky musical celebration of jazz music and swing dance. At least SummerStock Austin thinks so, and I whole-heartedly agree. Their production of Swing!, a dazzling and energetic musical revue, is absolutely astonishing and completely entertaining. Though SummerStock Austin's other two current productions of Pippin and The Bremen Town Musicians are excellent and memorable, Swing! proves to be the biggest crowd-pleaser of the bunch.

Country Dance*New York will present a lively contra dance on Saturday, June 8th, from 8:00 pm to 10:45 pm at the Church of the Village (201 West 13th Street, Manhattan). No previous experience is required and it is not necessary to come with a partner. From 7:30 pm to 8:00 pm there is a beginners' workshop, and the caller walks everyone through the patterns of each dance. Tickets go on sale for Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing starting Wednesday, May 22. Individual tickets are $17, which includes a dance lesson with a professional instructor followed by two sets of dancing under the stars to a live orchestra. This summer marks the 25th Anniversary season of Midsummer Night Swing, and to celebrate, tickets will be sold at a special '2 for $25' price on May 22 only. There are also Midsummer Night Passes priced at $84 for six admissions, and $170 for the full season. Four-admission passes are available for $60.

Lincoln Center Announces Midsummer Night Swing 25th Anniversary Season

New York's most fabulous outdoor dance party - Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing ? marks its 25th Anniversary season this summer by inviting New York's iconic dance bands to bring live music to Damrosch Park. Taking place Tuesdays through Saturdays, June 25-July 13, Midsummer Night Swing will bring together people of all ages, at every skill level, and from dozens of different ethnic and economic backgrounds for evenings of social dance. Says Bill Bragin, Director of Public Programming for Lincoln Center, "In its 25 year history, Midsummer Night Swing has been responsible for helping revive social dancing, not only in New York but around the country and abroad. This anniversary year we celebrate the magic of dancing to some of New York's greatest bands, along with some of the best from around the globe."
