Following the successes of the first half of this season-from the multiple Helen Hayes Award nominations for Salome and Kiss Me, Kate, to the critical acclaim of The Critic and The Real Inspector Hound-Artistic Director Michael Kahn announced today the Shakespeare Theatre Company's 2016-2017 season. Kahn has put together a season of new debuts of both artists and works, and one with innovative adaptations and classic tragedies that continue STC's mission to re-think, re-work, and re-introduce classic texts and themes to its contemporary D.C. audiences.

Theatergoers have until this weekend to catch Repertory Philippines' take on the 1991 Tony Award-winning musical THE SECRET GARDEN, which features book and lyrics by Tony winner Marsha Norman ('The Color Purple,' 'The Bridges of Madison County') and music by Lucy Simon ('Doctor Zhivago'), at Onstage Theatre, Greenbelt 1, Makati City.

Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved novel THE SECRET GARDEN has been thrilling the imaginations of readers young and old since 1911, and in 1991 Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon's musical adaptation won three Tony Awards, bringing the classic story to life in a brand new way. Their musical, which is playing at Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre through December 20th, thrived on Broadway, and regionally ever since, because of its soaring music, life-affirming story, and the creativity that its magical world allows. Unfortunately, directed by Aradhana Tiwari, Mad Cow's production squanders a universally talented cast on a bleak and bland vision that lacks the magic and imagination that the story, on both page and stage, has inspired for over a century.

Tony-winning musical directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge should not be missed.

On Friday, November 13th, the Theater People Podcast is releasing a bonus 'catching up' episode with previous guest, Tony Award-winner Daisy Eagan. Eagan became the youngest female Tony Award winner, when she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for originating the role of Mary Lennox in the 1991 Broadway production of THE SECRET GARDEN. I was shocked and then realized I was behind the eight ball when hearing that Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park would open its season with a musical interpretation of The Secret Garden. Shocked because I somehow missed that my beloved girlhood book and movie had been turned into a musical. Albeit this occurred back in 1991, but still I found myself curious as to how the story would translate into this medium. Well I watched the performance of this version and I have mixed thoughts.

The 69th Annual Tony Awards are this Sunday June 7th at 8/9c hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming. It's the biggest award show of the Broadway season and it closes out a long award season for Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals and plays. We can't help but wonder what chances this year's Best Musical and Best Play nominees have of taking home the ultimate prize. 

The Court Theatre ends its 60th with the extraordinary revival of THE SECRET GARDEN

Raucously witty and devilishly ribald, love and money are at stake in David Ives' hilarious, rhyming 'translaptation' of The Heir Apparent by Jean-Francois Regnard. Comedic director extraordinaire Matt Walker directs the Los Angeles premiere of Regnard's newly rediscovered 18th century comic masterpiece for a June 19 opening at International City Theatre. Two low-priced previews are set for June 17 and 18.
