BWW Interview: Cassie Nickols of DAMN YANKEES at Cabrillo Music Theatre
by Cary Ginell - Oct 16, 2015

One of the most talented musicians to join the Ventura County musical theater scene in the past few years has been Cassie Nickols. Most audiences haven't seen Cassie before because she has spent most of her time behind the scenes, working first as a rehearsal pianist and then as assistant musical director. But in Cabrillo Music Theatre's current production of Damn Yankees, which begins this evening at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Cassie will be up front, baton in hand, leading the orchestra and the performers on stage as a full-fledged music director. It's been a long road for Cassie, a gifted musician who spent years studying her craft in college before joining the local musical theatre scene. We talked to Cassie about her thoughts behind making this key transition from performer to leader. (more...)

BWW Review: Sondheim's Storytelling Shines in Winter Park Playhouse's PUTTING IT TOGETHER
by Matt Tamanini - May 6, 2015

Stephen Sondheim is the greatest writer that the musical theatre has ever known. Now, obviously, intelligent minds can disagree, but if you do, I'm sorry, you're wrong. From story integration, to compelling characterizations, to insightful and witty lyrics, to complex and engaging melodies, no one has ever done it better than the man that many call "The Master." Sondheim's genius comes from the fact that every syllable he writes, and every note he composes, is in service of the story that he is telling; which is why I am always apprehensive of seeing one of the numerous revues of his work. Though he has been intimately involved in such shows as SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM, Marry Me a Little, and PUTTING IT TOGETHER, which is running through May 9th at The Winter Park Playhouse, it often feels slightly disingenuous to see his songs, which fit so seamlessly amidst their original works, shoe-horned into completely contrived circumstances. Fortunately, under the direction of Roy Alan (who also choreographed), WPP's production makes each of Sondheim's beloved songs feel fresh, exciting, and (nearly) wholly original. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Good People's MARRY ME A LITTLE Takes Pleasingly Gentle Approach with Sondheim Revue
by Don Grigware - Jun 22, 2015

During the crazy broohaha of the Hollywood Fringe Festival, there are plenty of loud, over.the.top noisy shows, if that suits your pleasure. Sondheim's Marry Me a Little is a quiet, gentle little 60-minute musical revue that just doesn't fit that bill. And that's totally fine by me! I prefer Sondheim anyway. In Marry Me a Little, conceived by Craig Lucas and Norman Rene, many of the songs are from the then - late 90s - unproduced Saturday Night coupled with a multitude of songs cut from hits like Company, Follies, A Little Night Music and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. It's a two-person intimate show on the vast Lillian stage and as usual Janet Miller has staged the piece adeptly with lots of tender loving care. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Skylark Opera Offers Two Different but Equally Satisfying Music-Theater Shows in their Annual Summer Festival
by Jill Schafer - Jun 16, 2015

One of the theatrical highlights of the summer, Skylark Opera's Annual Summer Festival, is upon us! As usual, the two shows playing in repertoire include one that's more of a traditional opera (but always in English) and one that skews a bit more towards musical theater: Puccini's LA RONDINE and the Sondheim musical revue PUTTING IT TOGETHER (put together by Sondheim himself). As someone who loves musical theater but doesn't venture into the world of opera very often, Skylark's Summer Festival offers a fun, easy, accessible way to enjoy to dip my toes into the opera scene and indulge my love of musical theater. Both shows are highly entertaining with excellent casts and orchestras. But the runs are short with just four performances of each show. So read on, take your pick, and get your tickets before this all-too-brief Summer Festival is gone like the all-too-brief Minnesota summer! (more...)
