Lyric Music Theater has mounted a dazzling new hit to brighten the waning days of winter. Under the direction of Raymond Marc Dumont, the venerable South Portland community theatre has put together an energetic, sophisticated, and compelling production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods that is, quite simply, one of the season's best efforts on any stage!

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will host 22 theatrical offerings from 20 different countries during WORLD STAGES: International Theater Festival 2014 that will run for three weeks March 10-30, 2014 throughout the Center. The international festival features contemporary theater works offering 13 fully staged productions, 4 theater-focused installations, 3 readings of new works, and 2 forums. From Olivier and Tony Award-winning puppetry to innovative perspectives on old classics, a diverse showcase of theatrical expression will be represented by countries spanning the globe including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, England, France, Iceland, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestine, Scotland, South Africa, Sudan, Syria, and the United States.

When it comes to modern musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's INTO THE WOODS is definitely among the most beloved. The show had its world premiere in 1986, opened on Broadway in 1987, and won the 1988 Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical in a year that was otherwise dominated by Andrew Lloyd Webber's THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. The Old Globe today announced its 2014 Summer Season. Old Globe Artistic Director Barry Edelstein will make his Summer Shakespeare Festival directorial debut with Shakespeare's great tragedy Othello. Presented in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, the Festival will also include Shakespeare's comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona, directed by Globe alumnus and Tony Award nominee Mark Lamos (Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Pentecost, Resurrection Blues). The Summer Season will also feature Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical Into the Woods, which made its World Premiere at The Old Globe in 1986, in an inventive reimagining by Fiasco Theater, directed by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld, in a production that originated at McCarter Theatre Center. Rounding out the season is Ronald Harwood's comedy Quartet, directed by Richard Seer. Into the Woods will run on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre and Quartet in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, both part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Tickets to the Globe's 2014 Summer Season are currently available by subscription only, and prices range from $92 to $332. Today in 1989, Into the Woods closed at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 765 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera.

Bristol Riverside Theatre concludes its Summer Musicale series on a high note with BRT Broadway Collection, an evening of hit songs from Broadway's favorite musicals such as Oliver, My Fair Lady, and Wicked. Running today, August 15-August 25, the show features BRT favorite David Edwards, as well as local talent Lauren Cupples, Kristine Fraelich, Jessica Gruver, and Sean Thompson. A production with fabulous performers, a red-hot band, and the sounds of Broadway's best showstoppers, BRT Broadway Collection will have audiences singing and dancing in aisles.

Major cast changes will take place in the smash hit Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" at Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End from Monday 2 September 2013. Fresh from his success as Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables" at the Queen's Theatre Geronimo Rauch will join the cast as 'The Phantom'. At the same time Broadway leading man Sean Palmer will join as 'Raoul'. Deadline.com reports that Tony nominee Tammy Blanchard is in talks to join Rob Marshall's movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical INTO THE WOODS for Disney. She would play the role of 'Florinda', one of Cinderella's stepsisters, alongside Lucy Punch as the other sister, and Christine Baranski as the evil stepmother.

According to Deadline, 2013 Tony nominee Billy Magnussen is in talks to play Rapunzel's Prince in Rob Marshall's film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical INTO THE WOODS. Magnussen would replace Jake Gyllenhaal, who recently dropped out to focus on his upcoming indie flick NIGHTCRAWLER.

Enrollment applications are being accepted now for Segerstrom Center's Six Days of Broadway summer musical theater camp, which returns to the Center's campus June 24 through July 7. Students will participate in week-long intensives that feature classes in musical performance, monologue interpretation, audition technique, scene work, dance and more. Tony Award nominee and Broadway/film star Erin Dilly returns to lead the program along with Broadway veterans Stephen Buntrock, Danny Gurwin, Hank Stratton and other guest instructors.

Dallas Theater Center presents the world premiere of Fly, a new musical based on J.M. Barrie's novel, Peter Pan. Three-time Tony Award-winning producer Jeffrey Seller (Rent, Avenue Q, In the Heights) makes his directorial debut with this production.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Anna Kendrick, who is currently filming THE LAST FIVE YEARS adaptation, is in talks to play 'Cinderella' in Rob Marshall's INTO THE WOODS. The actress played the same part in last year's all-star reading of the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tracey Ullman is the latest actress in negotiations to join Rob Marshall's film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical INTO THE WOODS. If cast, Ullman will play Jack's mother.
