Everyman's Pygmalion: A Gem of a ProductionEveryman's Pygmalion: A Gem of a Production
by Tina Saratsiotis - May 27, 2011

In the Greek myth of the same name, the sculptor Pygmalion creates his vision of the perfect woman, Galatea, and breathes life into the statue with the help of the gods. In George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, Professor Henry Higgins changes the life of a cockney flower girl through the magic of language and a good makeover. At the Everyman Theatre, director Eleanor Holdridge breathes new life into this timeless story which has been told and retold in many times and many ways since its publication in 1913. (more...)

A unique masterpiece, Pygmalion is one of Bernard Shaw's most popular plays. It is the story of phonetics professor Henry Higgins who bets that he can transform Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a lady and pass her off in High Society. Pygmalion is a modern myth and also a strikingly contemporary view of sexual politics and the science of romance. The story inspired the well-known Lerner and Loewe musical My Fair Lady (1956). Recommended for general audiences. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Laguna Playhouse Revisits PRIVATE LIVESBWW Reviews: Laguna Playhouse Revisits PRIVATE LIVES
by Michael L. Quintos - Mar 30, 2011

One of the stage's most prolific playwrights and stage impresarios, Noel Coward's madcap romantic comedy PRIVATE LIVES gets a richly amusing though slightly by-the-numbers revival at the Laguna Playhouse, now playing through April 10. Full of his biting wit and old school farcical elements that still hold up surprisingly well, this revival production--helmed by former Artistic Director Andrew Barnicle--is full of hearty, genuine laughs. Shimmering with 18 songs from Cole Porter's most beloved musicals, High Society, the Musical is a high energy stage adaptation of the 1950's movie that starred Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. The fast-moving story centers on a comically pretentious Oyster Bay wedding in June, 1938. Hilarious romantic complications revolve around the bride-to-be, her parents, and a smitten tabloid reporter. Colorful production numbers capture all the magic of Cole Porter's timeless lyrics.
