Era il 1953 quando la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer diede il via alla produzione di due dei suoi film musicali piu 'classici,' ossia Seven Brides for Seven Brothers e Brigadoon. Non e un mistero che la Casa del Leone fosse piu interessata all'ultimo, adattamento cinematografico del primo successo teatrale di Alan Jay Lerner e Frederick Loewe (My Fair Lady, Camelot, Paint Your Wagon) e lo dimostra il fatto che il budget per Sette Spose venne drasticamente tagliato a 2,540,000 dollari (rispetto ai 3,019,000 di Brigadoon). L'investimento 'risicato' creo non pochi problemi alla produzione che, non disponendo dei mezzi necessari, dovette girare in studio anche le scene all'aperto facendo ricorso a fondali non proprio realistici. Nonostante gli ambienti visibilmente artificiali, all'uscita del film nel 1954, l'indimenticabile love story tra Milly e Adamo, le coreografie di Micheal Kidd, l'indovinato cast capitanato da Jane Powell e Howard Keel - in cui figurava, nel ruolo di una delle spose, la Catwoman Julie Newmar - e la splendida partitura di Gene de Paul e Johnny Mercer conquistarono gli spettatori di ogni parte del mondo rendendo Seven Brides for Seven Brothers una delle punte di diamante del repertorio MGM. Brigadoon, per contro, nonostante la presenza di Gene Kelly e Cyd Charisse, non ottenne il successo sperato. (more...)

A.R.T.'s Re-Imagined Production of THE TEMPEST Will Now Play Smith Center Through 4/27

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts has now added a third and final week of performances for the world premiere of THE TEMPEST, which will now play April 6-27, with special preview performances April 1-4. The opening night celebration will take place on Saturday, April 5. Produced in association with the American Reparatory Theater (A.R.T.), THE TEMPEST is adapted and directed by Aaron Posner and Teller from the play by William Shakespeare, with magic by Teller, music by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan and movement by Matt Kent of Pilobolus. THE TEMPEST will perform at The Smith Center's Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park in a 500-seat climate-controlled tent. Tickets start at $35 for regular performances and $25 for preview performances. An Evening of Live Radio Show Classics,' on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at The Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. The live show with post-performance VIP reception will take the audience back in time to radio's golden age of the 1940s and 1950s with all of the stage gimmicks in tact including sound effects created right on stage, applause signs-and even commercials with original jingles for the modern-day companies sponsoring the special event. The radio shows to be vividly recreated are 'The Bickersons,' 'Sherlock Holmes,' and 'My Favorite Husband.' The Cincinnati Ballet blew audiences away with its World Premier of King Arthur's Camelot. The completely original ballet truly shows the world what the Cincinnati performing arts scene is capable of. This was my first experience with the Cincinnati Ballet and I am officially a super fan. I have always loved this classical form of dance, and King Arthur's Camelot is definitely the best ballet I have ever seen. (more...)

L.A. DELI to Open 3/22 at Marilyn Monroe Theatre

Omaha Performing Arts' 2014/2015 Season will be a spectacular season of award-winning productions and performers. The upcoming season was announced during a subscriber and patron event at the Holland Performing Arts Center on March 31. Two of the iconic Rockettes helped kick off the night and led a dance demonstration for local youth in the lobby after the event.
