Short on financial resources but long on ambition, Utopia Opera started its eighth season last weekend with a New York premiere: Thea Musgrave's THE STORY OF HARRIET TUBMAN. It's a 90-minute chamber version, orchestrated by composer Julian Grant, of Musgrave's full-length, two-act HARRIET, THE WOMAN CALLED MOSES, which debuted in 1985 at the Virginia Opera, with some fervent portrayals by its cast of about two dozen, including the stellar soprano MaKayla McDonald as Harriet and mezzo Karmesha Peake as her mother, Rit.

BroadwayWorld has just learned that Broadway writer and lyricist and Tony nominee Ira Gasman passed away on Saturday, October 6, in Norfolk, Virginia. He was 76 years old.

Delaware Theatre Company is celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season by honoring the company founder and directors emeriti at their annual fundraiser, Wine Feast & Auction, on November 2, 2018 at 6PM at the Chase Center on the Riverfront. Honorees include founder Cleveland Morris and directors emeriti Carol Balick, Marilyn Hayward, Michael T. Marquardt, Charles F. Richards, Jr., Esq., and William M. Shea. Morris, now living in Virginia, will attend the Wine Feast.

Following the announcement of their Opening Night Film, Yen Tan's award-winning AIDS drama 1985, NewFest today announced the full lineup of their 30th annual celebration of the year's best LGBT films from around the world. The program of more than 140 narrative features, documentaries, episodic series and shorts runs from October 24-30 at the SVA Theatre, Cinépolis Chelsea, and The LGBT Community Center in New York City.

 NewFest has announced its Opening Night film to be Yen Tan's powerful AIDS drama '1985' on Wednesday, October 24th. This year will mark the highly significant 30th anniversary of NewFest, one of the world's most venerable and respected LGBT festivals. '1985' joins a history of notable NewFest Opening Night Films, including 'Go Fish' (1994), 'High Art' (1998), 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' (2001), 'But I'm a Cheerleader' (2000), and 'We Were Here' (2011). The film is a return to NewFest for Tan, whose previous films “Ciao” (2008) and “Pit Stop” (2013) have screened at the fest in the past.

The Nashville Association of Talent Directors (NATD) has announced six highly-respected honorees who will be recognized at the 8th Annual NATD Honors Gala scheduled for November 7, 2018, at the Hermitage Hotel. Tickets for the gala can be purchased here.

A trailer has been released for Yen Tan's '1985' starring Cory Michael Smith, which opens on October 26th.

'The most surprising thing I've discovered is that my work doesn't feel like work anymore,' said Northern Virginia-based interior designer and decorator Lauren Liess. She spoke these words more than 10 years ago after graduating from the New York Institute of Art and Design's Interior Design Course. Wolfe Releasing has announced today that it has acquired writer director Yen Tan's 1985, starring Cory Michael Smith (FOX's 'Gotham'), Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen (Sideways), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Michael Chiklis ('The Shield') and Jamie Chung (FOX's 'The Gifted' and ABC's 'Once Upon a Time'), for a theatrical release this October. The Texas-set family drama had its World Premiere at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival, where it was praised as 'a miracle of a film' (Film School Rejects), 'a poignant, even provocative meditation on a part of LGBTQ history' (The Daily Beast), 'a deeply emotional tearjerker and family story... that earns its tears honestly and scrupulously' (The Wrap) and 'a model of eloquent restraint' (The Hollywood Reporter).

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festivals announced the features lineup and opening night film for the 25th edition of the Film Festival, running March 9-18, 2018 in Austin, Texas. The acclaimed program draws thousands of fans, filmmakers, press, and industry leaders every year to immerse themselves in the most innovative, smart and entertaining new films of the year.

Virginia Stage Company presents PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, based on the 1813 novel by Jane Austen, and adapted for the stage by Joseph Hanreddy and J.R. Sullivan. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE opened January 17th and runs through February 4th.

Mosaic Theater Company of DCtakes its acclaimedVoices From a Changing Middle East Festival on tour this winter, bringing several of its seminal Festival productions (I SHALL NOT HATE, VIA DOLOROSA, and the recent film adaptation of WRESTLING JERUSALEM) to the University of Oklahoma, Grinnell College, and Eastern Mennonite University for presentations of each project, and culminating in a special evening at the University of Chicago's Logan Center for the Arts where excerpts from all three works will be shared in a single evening. The tour reflects different dimensions of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the efforts to achieve reckoning and reconciliation through live performance and discussion, in works performed in English, Arabic, and Hebrew (with translated surtitles).

The New York Choral Society (NYCHORAL), under the baton of music director David Hayes, will appear at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium (881 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019) with Where Even the Sea Sings, Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2018, at 3 pm. This program juxtaposes three composers of very different backgrounds and styles, inspired by a shared commonality in theme: the grandeur of the 'sea.'
