Beware the Ides of March with 15 Shakespeare Showtunes
by Matt Tamanini - Mar 15, 2015

'If music be the food of love, play on.' Even before the invention of the musical comedy (more on that later), William Shakespeare knew the importance of music in telling stories on stage. For our March feature, my colleague Jeff Walker and I thought that instead of marking the Ides of March with songs about murder, betrayal, and fate, we would focus on the synergy between showtunes and Shakespeare.

BWW Reviews: Outstanding Production of THE WINSLOW BOY by The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis
by Chris Gibson - Feb 17, 2015

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' artistic director, Steven Woolf, always has a knack for finding a classic, sometimes a neglected one, to present each season. This year it's Terence Rattigan's revered play THE WINSLOW BOY, which some will remember from various revivals and film versions (1948 & 1999), and which stands out as a dramatic piece fraught with injustice. It's a story, based on fact, that is still as relevant today as it was when it was written. A splendid cast and keenly sharpened direction combine to provide a very compelling piece of theatre.

BWW Reviews: A Glimpse into THE BEAUTIFUL DARK
by Amanda Finn - Jan 26, 2015

Shattered glass. Upon entering the playing space inside of Bartell Theatre, audiences are confronted with shadowy lights, created by the gobos, that very closely resemble shattered glass. Or, perhaps, razor blades - but who can tell? That's the point of Erik Gernand's play The Beautiful Dark - every person's view is resoundingly different.

by BWW News Desk - Nov 12, 2014

The Richmond Symphony, its Board of Directors, Musicians, Chorus and Staff are saddened to learn of the passing of James Erb, founder and former director of the Richmond Symphony Chorus, and life-long friend to the organization. Erb organized the all-volunteer Richmond Symphony Chorus in 1971 for a performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, under guest conductor Robert Shaw. For 36 years, Erb continued to direct and build the Chorus to reflect the Symphony's high standards. He will be deeply missed by the RSO family as it reflects on his immeasurable positive impact on the Symphony, the Chorus and their ability to present world-class performances in Richmond and beyond. A testament to his lasting legacy is the Richmond Symphony Foundation's James Erb Choral Chair endowment fund of $400,000 that supports its Choral Director position in perpetuity.
