She personally witnessed how the Hitler Youth was tapped by the great dictator in his efforts to take over Germany, Europe and eventually the world. Like most people in her hometown, she suffered greatly before, during and after World War II. In 2011, Cowan bravely revealed her experiences in her book, titled 'The Shadow of the Hakenkreuz.' Now, she brings that book on to the world stage by entering it in an International Book Exhibit.

Minnesota Opera is pleased to announce casting updates for the 2013–2014 season, which boasts three company premieres and five productions new to Minnesota audiences. Based on anticipated demand, the boundary-busting production of The Magic Flutewill receive nine performances. Other season highlights include James Valenti starring in the premiere of a revised The Dream of Valentino by Dominick Argento as part of Minnesota Opera's New Works Initiative; Kelly Kaduce in an opulent production of Puccini's soulful Manon Lescaut; Jacquelyn Wagner, Elizabeth Futral, Brian Jagde and Craig Irvin in a stylish production of Strauss' romantic comedy, Arabella; and Verdi's chilling take on the Shakespearean thriller, Macbeth, starring Brenda Harris and Greer Grimsley. Gotham Chamber Opera together with Opera Philadelphia and Music-Theatre Group is proud to announce the third track in the nation's first comprehensive, operatic Composer In Residence program. Funded initially by a $1.4 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program has received an additional $330,000 from the foundation to provide a third professional development path for one of today's most promising opera composers, selected on a competitive basis. Tennessee-born novelist Linda Lappin author of the Indie classic,The Etruscan, takes on the mystery of Italy's celebrated Monster Park in her new novel Signatures in Stone. The park, located in Bomarzo not far from Rome, originally created in the 16th century by a Roman nobleman as a memorial to his wife, leads visitors on a journey through hell represented by its eerie sculptures of ogres, mermaids, and giants. Art historians are puzzled by its meaning: is it a pagan itinerary of initiation, a surreal illustration of its patron's weirdest nightmares, an allegory for political events, or a series of emblems concealing an alchemical formula for making gold? And who was the real mastermind behind this complex creation? Was it, perhaps, as some scholars believe, one of the greatest sculptors of the Italian Renaissance?

Cleveland Play House (CPH) will host their 17th Hall of Fame Luncheon on Tuesday, May 14th in the Allen Theatre at PlayhouseSquare. This year's honorees have contributed to the success of CPH through many different avenues, and their professional accomplishments have accentuated CPH's proud history. This year's recipients include Dorothy and Frank Draz, Dee Hoty, Barclay Leathem and Jack Weston. Also being recognized is The Women's Committee of Cleveland Play House, which will be presented with the Heritage Award by Roe Green for their contributions to CPH.
