Ingrid U. Cowan Releases Memoir on Germany's Dark Period Under Hitler

Ingrid U. Cowan grew up in the midst of Adolf Hitler's rise to power. She personally witnessed how the Hitler Youth was tapped by the great dictator in his efforts to take over Germany, Europe and eventually the world. Like most people in her hometown, she suffered greatly before, during and after World War II. In 2011, Cowan bravely revealed her experiences in her book, titled "The Shadow of the Hakenkreuz." Now, she brings that book on to the world stage by entering it in an International Book Exhibit.

This biographical journey takes readers on a voyage into the first half of German history in the 20th century as observed by a German family. Coming out of World War I, Germans tried to understand their lives apart from a ruling imperial family, adjusting to democracy under the Weimar Republic. Before they understood this new society, they found themselves ensnared by a totally new political system. Freedom for Germany and Europe came at a ghastly price of death and destruction, when the rest of the world helped to throw off the yoke of the Hakenkreuz.

Such harrowing events and more are revealed in Cowan's stirring memoir, "The Shadow of the Hakenkreuz." Through her book, Cowan simply wishes to share with readers the plight of her own people during the dark days of Germany, so that they may see them better in the proper light and understand their history.

Ingrid U. Cowan was born in Berlin, Germany, on June 19, 1927, just in time to be a five-year-old girl when Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. She saw her hometown and her country crumble in his attempt to fulfill the promise of a song - he had the youngsters sing, "Today we own Germany - tomorrow the whole wide world!" The author, along with many others, recovered from Hitler's delusions of grandeur and learned to live normal lives. The author left Berlin at the age of 17, just before the Russians invaded Berlin and never went back, but in 1958, she immigrated to the U.S.A.
