Symphony Space's Gertrude Stein's Paris, a month-long, multi-disciplinary festival devoted to the vibrant cultural milieu of Gertrude Stein's Paris, continues on Friday, April 27 with two fully staged productions devoted to the inspiration Stein's work had on vocal and operatic repertoire. Encompass New Opera Theatre will present two one-act operas based on texts by Stein, Virgil Thomson's Capital Capitals and Ned Rorem's Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters. Directed by Nancy Rhodes, this salute to Stein's work through American opera is a fresh examination of the influence Stein has had throughout the arts. (more...)

The concert features the world premiere of Oscar Bettison's LA Phil-commissioned Livre des Sauvages, the U.S. premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Five Star Signs, and John Cage's Concerto for Prepared Piano, performed by Gloria Cheng. American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) will close its 2011-12 season with the Bay Area premiere of The Scottsboro Boys, the critically acclaimed musical based on a tragic chapter in American history. Nominated for twelve 2011 Tony Awards, The Scottsboro Boys features music and lyrics by the legendary Broadway songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman), book by David Thompson (Steel Pier, Chicago), musical direction by Eric Ebbenga, and direction and choreography by five-time Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman (The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Contact). Jeff Whiting will serve as associate director and choreographer. Tony and Emmy Award winner Hal Linden (Barney Miller, The Rothschilds on Broadway) joins the stellar cast as The Interlocutor. The Scottsboro Boys performs a limited run June 21-July 15, 2012, at the American Conservatory Theater (415 Geary Street, San Francisco). The revised book of The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess has been the subject of much discussion since it's debut at A.R.T. last August, and according to Patrick Healy of the New York Times, there is still debate over its Tony eligibility. Last week, when the Tony administration committee made a decision regarding David Alan Grier's eligibility as a featured actor, they 'took no action' with the musical's updated book (by Suzan-Lori Parks and Diedre Murray), thus making it ineligible for a 'Best Book' Tony Award. The Jewish Museum will present Dirty Sock Music Romps, a weekly music class for toddlers on ten Tuesdays from January 31 through April 3, 2012 from 10:00 to 10:45 am. This hip and original class is being taught by Mike Messer, lead singer of The Dirty Sock Funtime Band. Toddlers ages 6 months to 4 years will play on a series of kid-sized instruments, learn to keep beats, and have a chance to dance, jump, clap, sing, and laugh. The songs used in the class are an upbeat mix of Dirty Sock hits, kid friendly rock songs, children's classics, and tunes fromSock-A-Delic, the new Dirty Sock Funtime Band album. Each song is an invitation to participate through call-back lyrics, interactive dances, and hands-on jamming. All families will receive a Dirty Sock Funtime Band CD.. (more...)

Fred Newman and Annie Roboff's musical revival, Sally and Tom (The American Way) examines the 30-year relationship between Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings, a relationship that produced six children and embodies the wrenching conflict between democracy and slavery, and its legacy of racism that continues to shape America to this day. The Garden Theatre presents the Jester Theater Company production of The Foreigner, through April 1 at the Garden Theatre (160 West Plant Street). In this hilarious comedy, Englishman Charlie Baker, self-proclaimed "world's dullest man," and his friend Sgt. Froggy LeSueur vacation to a rural fishing lodge. Together they scheme to make Charlie appear as an exotic foreigner who can't speak English. Soon their plan backfires as lodge guests share with Charlie their deepest secrets and most sinister plans. The 'invaluable' and 'indispensable' Metropolitan Playhouse--2011 Obie Award winner--presents a revival of Deep Are the Roots, by Arnaud d'Usseau and James Gow. First staged in 1945 and revived in 1960, the play now receives the first professional production in the city in over 50 years, directed by Michael Hardart at Metropolitan's home.
