AS YOU LIKE IT, ROMEO AND JULIET Play At Westbrook Shakespeare Festival Through 5/23
by BWW News Desk - May 15, 2010

Acorn Productions, presenters of the "Naked Shakespeare" series, announces plans for the first annual Westbrook Shakespeare Festival, to take place May 14 to 23 at Riverbank Park in Westbrook, Maine. The Westbrook Shakespeare Festival will feature 2 different outdoor productions by Naked Shakespeare actors in repertory over 2 weekends. The featured presentation is AS YOU LIKE IT, directed by Michael Howard, which will be presented as a full-length production Friday through Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. AS YOU LIKE IT is a classic comedy of disguise, in which Rosalind, one of Shakespeare's strongest female characters, dresses as a man when she is exiled to the forest of Arden along with her cousin Celia. Theater-goers are invited to bring a picnic or purchase a fresh taste of the old Southwest from the event's sponsor, the Blue Burrito, who will be doing concessions for the performances. Acorn's production of Shakespeare's classic tragedy ROMEO AND JULIET, directed by Karen Ball, will be shown weekend afternoons at 2 p.m. This heart-breaking tale of teenage love has been substantially abridged to run about 90-minutes and is the final project of the Young Actors Shakespeare Conservatory, a training program for local teen actors that began meeting in the fall of 2009. Admission to all performances at the Westbrook Shakespeare Festival is free, with a $5 suggested donation for ROMEO AND JULIET and $10 for AS YOU LIKE IT.

BWW Reviews: ROMEO AND JULIET at the Annenberg Center
by Sarah Marcus - Apr 22, 2010

Romeo and Juliet is a classic that still rings true due to its commentaries on passion, violence, true love, regret, revenge, hatred, societal expectations, and fate. These themes brought to life by Shakespeare's beautiful language continue to ring true for theatergoers today. While all enter the theatre knowing the outcome, there's something for everyone to relate to here from crazy friends, overprotective/concerned parents, to first loves and everything in between. The greatest tragedy is found in the older generation's inability to put aside their feud, which is the cause of their children's untimely ends. The Acting Company/Guthrie Theatre Production of Romeo and Juliet features wonderful performances and interesting direction which together perfectly compliment the truth of Romeo's words, 'Here's much to do with hate, but more with love.'

BWW Reviews: New Jewish Theatre Presents ROMEO AND JULIET
by Chris Gibson - Apr 19, 2010

If you've read my reviews for the last few years then you know that I really enjoy a good re-imagining of a classic. I like experimentation in theatre, and it's always a thrill to see new life pumped into a time-worn favorite. There are certainly a lot of interesting ideas at work in writer/director Robin Weatherall's revision of Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET, and it's certainly deserving of being labeled as provocative.

REVIEW: Black Rep Opens 33rd Season with 1960's take on ROMEO AND JULIET
by Chris Gibson - Jan 21, 2010

In director Chris Anthony's notes in the program she discusses the question of relevance where Shakespeare's ROMEO AND JULIET is concerned. She correctly points out that 'Shakespeare wrote a story about two families that are fighting and two teenagers that are in love. If you have ever fought or fallen in love, Shakespeare is for you.' This timeless and tragic classic continues to resonate with modern audiences, and under Anthony's guidance it gets a new coat of paint by setting the tale in the turbulent 1960's during the so-called 'summer of love'.

MacMillan's masterful interpretation of Shakespeare's enduring romantic tragedy entered American Ballet Theatre?s repertoire in 1985 and has since become one of the Company?s signature productions. Against the sumptuous setting of Renaissance Italy, MacMillan weaves a dance tapestry rich in character nuance and sensuality, and Sergei Prokofiev's stirring music underscores the lyric beauty and passion of this beloved ballet's star-crossed lovers.
