Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, America's oldest orchestra, come to Walt Disney Concert Hall in the final event of the LA Phil's 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series, tonight, May 9, at 8 pm. Virtuoso pianist Yefim Bronfman joins the program, performing the West Coast premiere of Piano Concerto No. 2, by New York Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg. Also on the program are Dvorak's Carnival Overture and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Though Gilbert has previously appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH), most recently during the 2006/07 season, the performance will be the New York Philharmonic's WDCH debut. (more...)

Philip Glass Remix Album Featuring Beck, Tyondai Braxton and More Set for Release 10/23

Philip Glass, one of America's most esteemed composers, will be the subject of a remix project due October 23 on Orange Mountain Music. The idea for the record came together during a conversation between Philip and his friend and new collaborator Beck. The pair recruited producer Hector Castillo (David Bowie, Bjork, Lou Reed) to help assemble a collection of remixes of Glass' works by a list of critically acclaimed artists including Beck himself, Tyondai Braxton, Amon Tobin, Cornelius, Johann Johannsson, Nosaj Thing, Memory Tapes, Silver Alert and many others. Park Avenue Armory will present Trisha Brown Dance Company's reconstruction of ASTRAL CONVERTED, a groundbreaking work by choreographer Trisha Brown in collaboration with Robert Rauschenberg (visual and costume design) and John Cage (original music) July 10th - 14th, 2012. The piece will be presented in its entirety for the first time in 18 years in Park Avenue Armory's soaring 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall. The culminating work in Brown's Valiant Series, ASTRAL CONVERTED premiered at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1991. (more...)

The Old Globe's 2012-13 Season will feature the World Premieres of two new musicals: Allegiance - A New American Musical by Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione and A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak. The season also includes George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in celebration of the classic play's 100th anniversary and the World Premiere of a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey and Kirsten Brandt. Two recent Broadway hits will make their San Diego debuts at the Globe: David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People and Jon Robin Baitz's Other Desert Cities. Pakistani Singing Star Arif Lohar at Asia Society, 4/27-28

Asia Society, as part of the 2012 spring season of its series, "Creative Voices of Muslim Asia", presents Arif Lohar, one of Pakistan's Punjab folk singers, for a two-night run, tonight, April 27 and Saturday, April 28, 2012. The concert will cap a five-city U.S. tour, organized by Arts Midwest's "Caravanserai: A Place Where Cultures Meet." In a special collaboration, Arif Lohar will be joined by Brooklyn-based Pakistani songstress Arooj Aftab, whose signature sound fuses classical Pakistani and Sufi traditions with contemporary jazz and pop influences. Her new show - "The Happiest Sound In Town" - is her annual birthday celebration and features some of her most-requested numbers including "Guess Who I Saw Today," "Bye Bye Country Boy," "Rain" and "Golden Rainbow." Another highlight of the show, "Come In From The Rain," was a personal favorite of Johnny Carson; Maye performed it many times on "The Tonight Show" at his personal invitation. Maye's recent local appearances have been received with rave reviews and full houses. The show runs through Saturday, May 5 at the Loews Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue at 61st Street).
