Alan Gilbert Directs NY Phil in Walt Disney Concert Hall Debut, Featuring Yefim Bronfman Tonight, 5/9

Music Director Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, America's oldest orchestra, come to Walt Disney Concert Hall in the final event of the LA Phil's 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series, tonight, May 9, at 8 pm. Virtuoso pianist Yefim Bronfman joins the program, performing the West Coast premiere of Piano Concerto No. 2, by New York Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg. Also on the program are Dvorak's Carnival Overture and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. Though Gilbert has previously appeared at Walt Disney Concert Hall (WDCH), most recently during the 2006/07 season, the performance will be the New York Philharmonic's WDCH debut. (more...)

The season also includes George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in celebration of the classic play's 100th anniversary and the World Premiere of a new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House by Anne-Charlotte Hanes Harvey and Kirsten Brandt. Asia Society, as part of the 2012 spring season of its series, "Creative Voices of Muslim Asia", presents Arif Lohar, one of Pakistan's Punjab folk singers, for a two-night run, tonight, April 27 and Saturday, April 28, 2012. The concert will cap a five-city U.S. tour, organized by Arts Midwest's "Caravanserai: A Place Where Cultures Meet." In a special collaboration, Arif Lohar will be joined by Brooklyn-based Pakistani songstress Arooj Aftab, whose signature sound fuses classical Pakistani and Sufi traditions with contemporary jazz and pop influences. This will be the 21st Annual Free Memorial Day Concert offered by the New York Philharmonic, a tradition begun in 1992 as a gift to the people of New York City.
