New Animated Short THE REAL BEARS to Feature Music of Jason Mraz

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is escalating its longstanding campaign to reduce the consumption of soda and other sugary drinks today with the release of an animated short film exposing the drinks' unhappy health consequences. THE REAL BEARS tells the story of a family of polar bears who, even in their distant Arctic environment, are not immune from sunny marketing messages from Big Soda.

The Vilcek Foundation Presents the Winner and Finalists of the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise at Joyce SoHo, 11/15-18

The Vilcek Foundation will present Pivotal Works: The Vilcek Foundation Project, a four-night series of dance performances at Joyce SoHo from November 15-18, featuring the talents of the 2012 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Dance winner and finalists. The purpose of the Prize is to recognize contributions by foreign-born dance professionals in the United States. Leading off this program on November 15 & 16 will be the prize finalists Fanny Ara (France), Thang Dao (Vietnam), Alice Gosti (Italy) and Pontus Lidberg (Sweden). Showcasing a variety of dance styles, these choreographers will demonstrate both the cultural and artistic diversity of the contemporary dance field across genres such as modern, flamenco and experimental. Following the finalists program will be a two-night engagement, on November 17 & 18, by the Creative Promise Prize winner, Ivory Coast-born choreographer Michel Kouakou.

Court Theatre Offers Free JITNEY Performance for Students During CPS Teachers' Strike, 9/13

In response to the CPS teachers' strike, Court Theatre is offering a special free performance of August Wilson's Jitney, directed by Resident Artist Ron OJ Parson, for any CPS student (and one parent/guardian) with a valid CPS ID. This free matinee will be Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 10:30am at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue. There is no need to RSVP, simply present a valid CPS ID at the theatre.

The production will run tonight, September 6 - October 14, 2012 at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue. The press opening will be Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.

Before "Rent"-there was "La Boheme"-and now it's back for the kick-off of Pacific Symphony's new opera-vocal initiative, "Symphonic Voices." For three nights, the orchestra comes out of the pit and onto the stage for the presentation of one of Puccini's most popular and heartbreaking operas. Led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, "La Boheme's" timeless tale of carefree Bohemians and star-struck lovers features a cast of world-class opera singers, Pacific Chorale and the Southern California Children's Chorus-filling the stage with their astonishing voices. Inspired by St.Clair's successful career as an opera conductor in Europe, "Symphonic Voices" continues next season with another Puccini masterpiece of high emotion, grand tragedy and gorgeous music: "Tosca."

Parsons Dance returns to the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center from June 6-7, 2012, with a program that includes Round My World, a new piece by David Parsons that debuted at the Joyce earlier this year, as well as the choreographer's stroboscopic masterwork Caught.
