The book’s translator says: ”A thousand years ago, in Japan, an anonymous woman wrote a book without a title”. He gave the book a title How I Crossed the Bridge of Dreams. Still, we know about the author only what she had confided herself. Summin up a lifetime spanning half a century ”The Lady from the Sarashina Province” recalls mainly the past journeys, landscapes, autumn seasons, moons and flowers. And an unfulfilled love. And dreams. Only to come to a conclusion ”Fate is not my friend”. Chekhov’s three sisters who were the subject of Peter Eötvös’ opera in 1998 could have said the same. Creating after a decade a similar theatre of feminine yearnings, loneliness and consolations drawn from the contemplation of transient things, he gave it an imaginative quality. Without abandoning diatonics he shifted these memories deep into the mind viewing itself as a Zen garden.
