“Hamlet is like a sponge”, wrote Jan Kott of the Shakespearean original. And if it’s “like a sponge”, then nothing stands in the way for Hamlet to stop speaking and... start dancing. If music, singing arise where words cannot reach, then it’s no different with dance – dance that in its own abstract way is capable of dealing with the biggest issues of Hamlet: “to be or not to be”, “in my mind’s eye”, or “words, words, words”. The “mind’s eye” is constantly in motion during dance, and “words” even more so. And every dancer or choreographer knows that each consecutive step on the stage is a matter of to be or not to be. This is the latest in a series of Shakespearean ballets preparing us for the 400th anniversary of the death of the author of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet, this time in the interpretation of Jacek Tyski, soloist of the Polish National Ballet, who has been trying his hand at choreography with increasing success.
