New York Philharmonic Kicks Off Free Insights Series October 23

The 2013-14 season of the New York Philharmonic's Insights Series - in which artists and experts explore some of the season's themes and concerts - will begin this month with two events. The series is free to the public throughout the season, and all events take place at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center (Columbus Avenue at 62nd Street) at 7:30 p.m.

Marsh & McLennan Agency has partnered with several local businesses to donate a performance of the Huntington Theatre Company's hit production of The Jungle Book to the Marilyn Rodman Theatre for Kids. Thanks to the generosity of the presenting sponsor and others, over 800 Boston-area at-risk-youth will have the opportunity to attend free of charge what for many of them will be their first live theatrical performance.

This tour of Norway allows adventure-seeking families to immerse themselves in the activities that inspired the comedic adventure of Anna, the film's fearless and optimistic protagonist who sets off on a heroic journey to find her sister Elsa and save her kingdom from eternal winter.

The Huntington Theatre Company's production of The Jungle Book played its 100th performance on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:30pm and had another reason to celebrate on October 11th, when the legendary Ben Vereen stopped by to pay a visit. He was then surprised backstage by the cast and crew singing him a Happy Birthday, check out photos below!

Bernard Labadie will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Mozart's Requiem; J.S. Bach's Cantata No. 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!; and Handel's “Let the Bright Seraphim” from Samson. The program's soloists will include soprano Miah Persson, mezzo- soprano Stephanie Blythe, tenor Fre?de?ric Antoun in his Philharmonic debut, bass Andrew Foster- Williams, and the New York Choral Artists directed by Joseph Flummerfelt. Associate Principal Trumpet Matthew Muckey, replacing Principal Trumpet Philip Smith, who is on temporary leave from the Orchestra, will make his Philharmonic solo debut in these performances. The concerts will take place Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m.

The LA Phil announces the addition of prolific singer/songwriter Richard Marx ("Right Here Waiting"), singer/songwriter/producer/TV personality Kara DioGuardi (American Idol), and drummer/actor/vocalist Micky Dolenz (The Monkees) to Rita Wilson and Friends at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Wilson, the L.A.-born actress/producer, will reveal her expressive, denim-and-suede vocals in a nostalgic throwback to the soft rock of the '70s and '80s. Previously announced special guests include Jackson Browne and Jimmy Webb.
ESPN Makes Plans for New Bowl in Boca Raton

ESPN Regional Television, a subsidiary of ESPN, announced the creation of the Boca Raton Bowl in a six-year agreement beginning in 2014. The pre-Christmas bowl game will be affiliated with the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA and the Mid-American Conference with each conference participating an expected four times during the six-year span.

Music Director Marin Alsop leads the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Gustav Holst's influential work The Planets onThursday, November 7 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 10 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. A women's chorus from the Baltimore Choral Arts Society will join the Orchestra from offstage to perform the tone poem's final moment, Neptune, the Mystic. Also on the program is Stravinsky's Violin Concerto, performed by Leila Josefowicz, and Leopold Stokowski's 20th century arrangement of Bach's Toccata & Fugue. Maestra Alsop kicks off the first Off the Cuff series this season with a closer look into Holst's work, exploring its present-day relevance on Friday, November 8 at 8:15 p.m. at the Music Center at Strathmore and on Saturday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at the Meyerhoff. All four concerts will feature high-definition images from space projected onto a screen suspended above the orchestra.
