The feuding fairies and merry mechanicals at Synetic Theater have been invited by Instituto Chihuahuense de La Cultura, headed by Fermin Gutierrez Galindo, to perform at the 10th edition of Festival Internacional. The company's award-winning wordless Shakespeare production will be performed at Teatro De Los Heros in Chihuahua on August 13 at 8 pm and at Teatro Victor Hugo Rascon Banda in Juarez on August 15 at 7 pm. For the third production in Cortland Repertory Theatre's 43rd annual summer season, the epic, international hit musical 'LES MISERABLES' takes the stage. Based on Victor Hugo's novel, the script of the musical is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, with music by Schonberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. Performances of CRT's production will run from tonight, July 9 - 26 with evening performances at 7:30. Matinees are available on July 11, 13, 16, 20, and 23 at 2:00 PM. Tickets may be purchased by calling 800-427-6160 or by visiting the CRT Box Office at 24 Port Watson Street in downtown Cortland. Happy Birthday Claude-Michel Schonberg! Schonberg is best known for his collaborations with the lyricist Alain Boublil. Thier stage musical version of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, which opened at the Palais de Sports in Paris in 1980, opened to acclaim in London in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987. In 1989, their success continued with the musical Miss Saigon, which starred Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce. Schonberg's next project with Boublil was The Pirate Queen, a musical about the 16th century Irish pirate, chieftain and adventuress Grace O'Malley, which opened on Broadway on April 5 2007. Last nights opening of the reimagined Les Miserables was a defining moment in Australian music theatre. While maintaining its history and staying true to its origins, Cameron Mackintosh's new production is the dawning of a new era. Its metamorphoses from its original production to this new adaption is subtle, yet every change advances the show into the realm of the contemporary theatre. While the grandeur of the original masterpiece is at times missed, the simplicity and sharpness of the design enhances the story and brings Victor Hugo's original text to life. (more...)
