Comedy of Sorrows (Commedia Al-Ahzaan) follows a young university-educated Egyptian woman who, through a series of encounters with different members of society, comes to realize that she had been oblivious to the poverty and misery of her fellow Egyptians. The play presents a collective and unsentimental account of a nation's awakening. Through a unique combination of vivid poetry and colloquial dialogue, it celebrates the uprising of a people, while at the same time anticipating the uncertainty and tumult of a nation struggling to transition to democracy.

Hybrid Theatre Works Announces Global Spotlight Series at La MaMa; Final Showcase Set for Today, 8/26

Hybrid Theatre Works, in collaboration with CultureHub at LaMama, has announced the inaugural Global Spotlight Series. The Global Spotlight Series seeks to provide a place for cultural exchange and exposure between U.S. audiences and artists with artists from specific regions around the world using the latest technology that enables us to bring artists and audiences together. The final workshop presentations will be performed today, August 26 at 12:00 noon EST, and will be live streamed to audiences around the world in real time. Complimentary light brunch will be served.

Directed by Tracy Cameron Francis and translated by Paul Schmidt, it is an epic exploration of the Algerian Arab revolt against their French colonizers which exalts the individual and relishes the theatrical.
