The Houston Ballet Presents MODERN MASTERS, Now thru 6/1

Now through June 1, 2014 Houston Ballet offers up a mixed repertory program showcasing works by three of the twentieth century's greatest choreographers entitled Modern Masters. The program features the company premiere of Jir?i? Kylia?n's comic and delightful Sechs Ta?nze (Six Dances), along with revivals of his playful and sexy work Petite Mort, William Forsythe's explosive In the middle, somewhat elevated and George Balanchine's complex and inventive The Four Temperaments. Houston Ballet will give six performances of the program in the Brown Theater at Wortham Theater Center.

Michele Wiles' BalletNext gave its best performance at BAM Fisher (Fishman Space), on Friday, May 17, Founded in 2011, the dancers have developed and matured into a cooperating, fluid dance company, rather than a group of interesting soloists without connection to each other. The two works presented had been previously performed by BalletNext and were welcomed back, demonstrating growth, deeper understanding of the works, and a stronger connection with the audience.

ZviDance to Premiere Premiere SURVEILLANCE, 6/11-14

Led by Israeli-born Artistic Director Zvi Gotheiner, ZviDance will premiere Surveillance, a contemporary dance and multimedia piece that explores the realities behind the surveillance camera. ZviDance's home season will be presented from June 11 - 14, 2014 at the New York Live Arts Theater, 219 W. 19th Street, New York City. Performances: Wednesday - Saturday at 7:30pm, & Saturday at 2pm. BalletCollective to Premiere New Works by Troy Schumacher, 10/29-30

BalletCollective will present two world premiere ballets that showcase the company's commitment to artistic collaboration on October 29 and 30 at NYU Skirball Center, 566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square. The program will include the company's The Impulse Wants Company (2013). All pieces will be accompanied by live music and feature lighting design by Brandon Stirling Baker.

Ronald K. Brown and Evidence, A Dance Company return for its annual New York season at the Joyce Theater, June 3-8, 2014. The exciting week-long run includes 2 programs. 3-Legged Dog has announced that it is partnering with The Joyce Theater for the NYC premiere of BEGINAGAIN, a new technology infused dance experience by the acclaimed Seattle-based zoe | juniper, which is part of JOYCE UNLEASHED. Conceived, designed and directed by Zoe Scofield and Juniper Shuey, with choreography by Zoe Scofield and visual design by Juniper Shuey, BEGINAGAIN opens tonight, May 8 for a limited engagement through Saturday, May 10.

Junior Society of Ballet Hispanico Hosts DANCE INTO FASHION Today

Ballet Hispanico, recognized as the nation's leading Latino dance organization since 1970, will host its annual Junior Society benefit, Dance Into Fashion, at The Jane Ballroom today, May 8, 2014 at 8pm. The evening will showcase the creations of Venezuelan-born fashion designer Angel Sanchez as modeled by Ballet Hispanico company dancers in a unique presentation choreographed by Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro. Mr. Sanchez's collaboration with Ballet Hispanico includes the design of original costumes for a new choreographic work premiering at the Company's New York Season at the Joyce Theater on April 15-27, 2014.

Pierre Rigal & compagnie derniere minute to Present MICRO at The Joyce Theater, 5/13-18

What does a dance company do when its founder and visionary dies? While some leave with succession plans in place, this question still troubles many prominent dance companies. While they might chose to only perform their namesake's original works, they risk being labeled as irrelevant. If the company chooses to continue to perform new work, they must walk the tightrope of finding choreography that is congruent with the company's repertoire but also new and interesting.

The Joyce Theater will present the U.S. debut of Cuba's MalPaso Dance Company, performing the U.S. premieres of works by Ronald K. Brown and the company's artistic director Osnel Delgado, from May 27 - June 1. This engagement on the stage of The Joyce's landmark Chelsea home marks the first time MalPaso will perform outside of Cuba since the company's 2012 formation.
