In a career spanning more than four decades, the contemporary American choreographer Karole Armitage has been celebrated for blurring the boundaries between dance, music and art. Inspired by disparate, non-narrative sources—from 20th century physics, to 16th century Florentine fashion, to pop culture and new media—the classical dance vocabulary, in her hands, is given a needed shock to its system with speed and fractured lines, abstractions and symmetry countermanded by asymmetry. On March 17, choreographers Netta Yerushalmy and Hillel Kogan will each present acclaimed works, and on March 20 and 21, the program will be an award-winning piece by Yossi Berg and Oded Graf. In a momentous co-commission, Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University and Ravinia Festival, will present two new works by world-renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp November 6 – 8, 2015. Celebrating 50 years of creating dance for both modern and ballet companies, television, Broadway and Hollywood, the program will be seen throughout North America during a 10-week anniversary tour to 15 cities, honoring Tharp's five decades of dance-making. The new works, each comprised of 12 dancers—many whom have worked with Tharp over the years—will have music by J.S. Bach, Henry Butler, Steve Bernstein and John Zorn. (more...)

Randy James' all male dance company, 10 Hairy Legs, returns to Crossroads Theatre, New Brunswick for its third consecutive appearance on Sunday, March 29 at 3:00 pm. Continuing to showcase the company's expanded repertory that explores the range of the male dancer, the performance will be followed by a Panel Discussion on the stage with Artistic Director Randy James, New Jersey choreographer Cleo Mack and Company Member Kyle Marshall. See some of New York City and the country's most renowned dance companies on Monday, February 16 at 7:30pm at The Joyce Theater (175 8th Avenue), where the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation will present DESTINY RISING, an incredible evening of dance artistry to benefit the NYC Dance Alliance Foundation College Scholarship Program (which to date has awarded $12.5 million in college scholarships to over 200 dancers all over the country). Featuring special performances from prominent professional dance companies from across the United States (plus outstanding NYC Dance Alliance alumni and NYC Dance Alliance faculty), some of the artists and companies taking part include Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, the Intermezzo Dance Company, and Keigwin + Company. The Joyce Theater Foundation announces the selection of Ballet West and Lyon Opera Ballet as recipients of The Rudolf Nureyev Prize for New Dance, a $25,000 award established to support the commissioning of new works for large ballet companies, many of whom rarely perform in New York. The prize allows companies accustomed to performing large scale work to create new pieces for a smaller venue. In turn, the award provides audiences with the opportunity to experience these companies in The Joyce Theater's intimate setting. Previous recipients are Houston Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet. Ronald K. Brown and Evidence, A Dance Company celebrate 30 years at the Joyce Theater, February 24 - March 1. Ronald K. Brown and Evidence, A Dance Company will usher in its 30th year with a company premiere, New York premiere, live music and revivals of classic works. The week-long run features two programs. Program A highlights include the powerful classic Grace and The Subtle One, danced to a suite composed and performed live by Jason Moran. Moran, score composer for the Oscar-nominated film “Selma” and Kennedy Center's Artistic Director for Jazz, will be joined by his band, The Bandwagon. Program B highlights include the NewYork premiere of Through Time and Culture, a solo by Brown, along with the company premiere of Why You Follow/Por Que Sigues. (more...)
