upstart crow Presents All-Female TITUS ANDRONICUS at Lee Center, 9/6-10/7
by BWW News Desk - Aug 27, 2012

upstart crow collective presents an all-female production of Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy, Titus Andronicus, September 6th to October 7th, 2012 at the Lee Center for the Arts on Capitol Hill. From the same team that brought you the popular and critically-acclaimed all-female King John in 2006, their newest production brings together some of Seattle's most respected female classical actors, who rarely get to meet each other onstage within Shakespeare's work.

BWW Reviews: CABARET from The Schoolyard Goes Contemporary
by Jay Irwin - Apr 29, 2012

This is not Liza's "Cabaret". This ain't even the edgier Alan Cumming version. The new Schoolyard production of Cabaret currently playing at Re-bar is a different animal entirely. With its more contemporary rock orchestrations and in your face style this production of the Kander and Ebb classic sometimes feels a bit forced into a new mold forsaking the spirit of the original but also manages some amazing moments of clarity of story and brilliant staging.

BWW Reviews: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM from Seattle Shakespeare Company
by BWW News Desk - Nov 13, 2011

There are many words I can use to describe Seattle Shakespeare Company's current production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". But the one word that kept popping up so many times while watching it was "HOT!" This production is just plain hot as director Sheila Daniels has put together a fearless production that puts in all the love, lust and sex you could ask for while also throwing in a bit of a twist and still keeping Shakespeare's ethereal comedy true to itself and fun as hell.

BWW Reviews: TURNING PARLOR TRICKS & KARAOKE SUICIDE IS PAINLESS at the Solo Performance Fest
by Jay Irwin - Apr 20, 2011

Getting up on stage by yourself is, to say the least, a daunting task. If you forget a line, or a bit of staging, there's no one there to turn to other than you. So it's a good thing we have such amazing talent here in Seattle to pull it off. This is why Theatre Off Jackson is back with their 5th annual Solo Performance Festival (SPF #5). And while I was only able to catch two of the seven acts running over the next few weeks, if the others are anything like these two, then who needs a full cast as these performers have enough talent and energy for 100 people.

BWW Reviews: THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW at Open Circle Theatre
by BWW News Desk - Apr 16, 2011

Before the midnight movie showings, before the audience participation there was a little stage show from England called "The Rocky Horror Show" that tried to push social and sexual boundaries with its risque themes. Well, Open Circle Theatre is trying to bring that boundary pushing into a new millennium with their own production of the classic, albeit odd, musical. And while some of it comes across as a bit self serving and under produced, the production manages to take a new look at what an old show could do today.
