Angela Meade's Summer 2014 Includes Festivals Across the U.S., 'WILLIAM TELL' in Edinburgh

Angela Meade – fresh from Metropolitan Opera triumphs as Bellini's Norma and as Alice Ford in Falstaff (the latter seen worldwide in the Met's Live in HD series) – has a busy summer ahead. The soprano, whose honors include the Richard Tucker and Beverly Sills Artist Awards, will perform at festivals across the U.S. from June through August. She launches her summer season as soprano soloist in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Baltimore Symphony under Marin Alsop (June 5-8) before taking on the title role of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia in her return to the Caramoor International Music Festival (July 12, 18). The Washington State native also headlines two festivals in Oregon: she sings Violetta in Verdi's La traviata for the gala opening concert of the Astoria Music Festival (June 14), and the title role of Bellini's Norma for Portland's SummerFest (Aug 8).

When the Vienna State Opera visited New York at the end of February, it brought Alban Berg's WOZZECK to Carnegie Hall as part of the “Vienna: City of Dreams” festivities. With the big sound of the Vienna Philharmonic central to the concert performance, it set out to show what a quintessentially Viennese opera sounded like played by the hometown band. Sorry, boys [and it's still mainly a male bastion], but the Met Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, could show you a thing or two.

The New York Philharmonic will celebrate the 2013 holiday season with timeless classics and new programs with theatrical flair that bring in talents from the worlds of Broadway and the Internet. This year's schedule includes the annual Holiday Brass concert with the Philharmonic Principal Brass Quintet, joined for the third consecutive year by Grammy and Emmy Award– winning pianist/arranger Lee Musiker and his trio; Handel's Messiah, led by Andrew Manze in his New York Philharmonic debut; A Broadway Christmas with Brian Stokes Mitchell, with the Tony Award winner making his Philharmonic debut in concerts led by Ted Sperling; and a New Year's Eve program led by Music Director Alan Gilbert with special guests Igudesman & Joo in their Philharmonic debuts.

San Francisco Symphony & Michael Tilson Thomas to Release New Recordings, 11/12

On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, Michael Tilson Thomas (MTT) and the San Francisco Symphony(SFS) will release a hybrid SACD recording and digital download of Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II and Symphony No. 2 on SFS Media, the Orchestra's in-house label. The recording is part of MTT & the SFS' multi-season focus on performing and recording the music of Beethoven. It features the Grammy-award winning San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and soloists Sally Matthews, soprano; Tamara Mumford, mezzo-soprano; Barry Banks, tenor; and Andrew Foster-Williams, bass-baritone. The performance was recorded live at Davies Symphony Hall May 2-3, 2013 during Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony's two-week festival exploring Beethoven's early inspirations. The recording of Beethoven's Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II and Symphony No. 2 can be pre-ordered on iTunes at itunes.com/sfsymphony and on SACD from the San Francisco Symphony Store at sfsymphony.org/store. The album will be available for purchase at music retailers everywhere on Tuesday, November 12. The Los Angeles Philharmonic and Classical KUSC, in partnership with WFMT Radio Network in Chicago, have confirmed 202 markets nationwide will carry the LA Phil's annual radio broadcast concert series (a number that will grow throughout the coming year). The 2012 series was broadcast in 238 markets and reached over 2.8 million listeners.

Dudamel Conducts the LA Phil in the World Premiere of THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE OTHER MARY, 3/7-10

Following Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic's successful world premiere of LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary last season, they present the oratorio in a theatrical setting at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, March 10, at 2 pm. Once again the Los Angeles Master Chorale and six soloists: mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, contralto Tamara Mumford, tenor Russell Thomas and countertenors Daniel Bubeck, Brian Cummings and Nathan Medley, return for Adams' large-scale LA Phil-commissioned work. The production also features dancers Michael Schumacher, Anani Sanouvi and Troy Ogilvie. Iconoclastic director Peter Sellars oversees the world premiere staging of the work. The project will then be taken on tour with its European premiere during the orchestra's international residency at the Barbican London, and continuing performances in Lucerne and Paris, followed by the East Coast premiere at Avery Fisher Hall in New York.
